GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of WIC, the Bilingual Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) provides specific breastfeeding support and educational services in the Illinois WIC Program. The Bilingual BFPC is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement in English and Spanish to WIC pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum persons. The Bilingual BFPC works principally in the WIC clinic setting. May provide services in a variety of settings including: medical community, the participants’ homes, community centers, faith institutions and retail establishments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Promotes breastfeeding and acts as an advocate in the clinic and in the community.

Talks with women individually or in groups about breastfeeding and answers basic questions about breastfeeding.

Provides anticipatory guidance to help women prepare for their hospital experience and the first few days, weeks, and months of breastfeeding.

Provides information on the effect of foods, medications, home remedies on lactation within her scope of practice and Department policy and local agency procedure.

Documents all contact/conversations with participants in the WIC MIS.

Refers participants to the appropriate staff as indicated by local agency procedure.

Establishes relationships with WIC pregnant persons and follows-up with them throughout their pregnancy and post-partum.

Establishes relationships and follows-up with WIC breastfeeding moms, based on the schedule, for the duration of breastfeeding.

Identifies and assists in recruiting and training additional candidates for BFPC training.

Assists in providing in-services or training sessions for other healthcare workers.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Required to work unconventional hours during evenings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· High school graduate or GED equivalent.

· Have similar characteristics as WIC participants.

· Have breastfeeding experience and an enthusiasm for breastfeeding.

· Must have breastfed at least one baby (within the last 5 years).

· Excellent verbal and written communication, in English and Spanish, with all levels of staff, patient population and the community composed of diverse cultures and age groups.

· Have the ability to work with infants and children.

· Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure as a representative of Roseland Community Hospital.

· Ability to work well with employees at all levels of the organization, including internal and external customers.

· Ability to document, develop and write reports clearly and accurately.

· Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

• Ability to prioritize, plan, and organize projects and task.

· Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast paced and stressful environment.

· This role requires various types of physical exertion with the use of hands, legs, and fingers including, but not limited to lifting, pushing, pulling, prolonged standing/walking, climbing stairs, operating equipment/devices or moving light to moderate weight.

· Must be self-directed and innovative.
