To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the supervision of the Director of Interpretive Services, the Field Interpretation Coordinator is responsible for advanced (senior-level) administrative and supervisory program work including the planning, organization and implementation of field-based interpretation for the Texas State Park Division. This position supervises the Regional Interpretive Specialists (RIS) team and serves as the team lead member on the Interpretive Services (IS) team. The RIS core functions include site and program evaluation, interpretive training, regional leadership and mentoring, interpretive planning and interpretive writing; manages the RIS team’s operating budget, assists with managing the donation budget and assists in oversight of the minor repair budget to evaluate, replace and repair exhibits. As the team lead member, this position is responsible for implementing strategic planning items assigned to the RIS team and forging communication between IS teams. Builds advocacy for field interpretation within the agency and division and expands volunteer opportunities and trainings to assist with field based interpretation. Assists with identifying and developing operating standards and procedures and best practices for field based interpretation in include signage, programming and evaluation. Coordinates and supports cross-divisional interpretive support and education opportunities. Assists RIS team with programs and trainings as needed. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Wildlife Management, History, Geology, Museum studies, Anthropology, Education or closely related field.


Experience:

Four years of experience in natural and/or cultural resource interpretation;

Experience as a supervisor or team lead.

NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.


Licensure:

If driving is required, applicant must possess a valid State driver’s license;

Must possess or be able to obtain, within two years of employment, the Certified Interpretive Trainer (CIT) certification through the National Association for Interpretation.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required certification.


ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Park Administration, Wildlife Management, History, Geology, Museum studies, Anthropology, Education or closely related, may substitute for one year of the required experience in natural and/or cultural resource interpretation.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Park Administration, Wildlife Management, History, Geology, Museum studies, Anthropology, Education or closely related field with course work in directly related fields to natural and cultural resource interpretation and education.


Experience:

Six years of experience in the field of natural and/or cultural resource interpretation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Required to work overtime as necessary;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Required to travel 40% with possible overnight stays;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
