Purpose of the job:

The Environmental Engineer will be responsible for ensuring compliance to regulatory permits regarding air, water, and waste for two NAM Compounding Sites.

Position involves considerable contact with local Operations, Laboratory, Maintenance, Safety, and Management personnel. Position is the established liaison with State and Federal environmental regulatory agencies as well as intra-company environmental technical groups.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Assuring that all Environmental, Health, and Safety regulatory and Borealis requirements have been properly identified and that processes are designed to ensure compliance.
  • Also includes managing the Product Stewardship Role for the sites with adherence to USEPA compliance related to TSCA. This is dotted lined to group Product Stewardship.
  • Works with corporate teams for reporting and assessing water conservation, energy, and other sustainability initiatives
  • Lead, support and promote the Process Safety and Lifesaving Rules
  • Supports the safety effort by setting expectations, participating, and leading HSE activities for their role (Risk Assessments, training, incident investigations, Safety Observations, and audits).
  • Completes investigation/assessment corrective actions
  • Adopts and implements best practices to resolve long-standing problems and new regulatory applicability.
  • Participating and/or coordinating various environmental audits/assessments and action plan development
  • Providing innovative and cost-effective solutions to compliance issues, emerging regulations and corporate initiatives.
  • Support other environmental programs as needed.
  • 15% Travel

Education/Experience

Skills & Knowledge Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of plant experience.
  • Managing previous environmental programs in a manufacturing plant is a plus.
  • Olefins and/or Polymers manufacturing experience is beneficial.
  • Six-Sigma Green Belt certification, preferred

  • Strong initiative to solve problems and make timely and effective decisions.
  • Proficient use of computer applications and databases allowing position to implement environmental programs and to use sophisticated modelling programs to predict emissions and releases.
  • Strong technical written and oral communication skills needed to interact effectively with regulatory agencies, community and plant representatives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills needed for teambuilding and networking in order to influence others.
  • Self directed and self motivated team player.

Physical Requirements

The engineer must be able to work in a variety of environments that include both fieldwork and deskwork. Minimum requirements include:

  • Maintaining constant awareness of personal safety and the safety of all other personnel. This includes knowledge of unit operation, procedures, and rules.
  • Being able to work in a safety sensitive environment that includes large rotating equipment and hazardous chemicals
