About Us!
Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a medical degree-granting program that builds on conventional medicine with an inclusive, compassionate, and whole health approach. The School of Medicine embraces self-care to empower students to care for their patients and themselves and helps them rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, physical, social, and emotional health. The School will have an attached clinic for training in these concepts. Currently, the School of Medicine seeks to be a national medical school with the goal of welcoming its inaugural class in 2025, pending programmatic and institutional accreditation.
Construction of the 154,000 square-foot building has begun with the goal of completing and welcoming the first class in Fall 2025, pending accreditation. AWSOM will be located east of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

We are building a cadre of medical professionals trained in conventional medicine and in Whole Health, by reimagining medical education. We seek leaders and faculty who are excited by this endeavor. Faculty and staff members will contribute to the development and rollout of the ARCHES curriculum, which is built on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. It includes the following six core elements:

  • Health Systems Sciences
  • Embracing Whole Health
  • Science of Medicine
All six areas of the curriculum will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum.
About The Position
The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs is responsible for the Office of Student Affairs and provides leadership for all student affairs matters including career advising, academic assistance, student progress, financial aid, registration, and academic events. The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs will hire and train advisory deans and manage the advisory dean program. Advisory deans provide individualized advising regarding academic progress, career planning, residency preparation, and mental health and wellness resources/referrals.
The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will also hire and supervise support staff in the Office of Student Affairs including the Registrar and Director of Financial Aid. The Office of Student Affairs will conduct and/or support activities related to academic and career advising, and monitoring student progression through the curriculum. The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs will work in conjunction with the Learning Specialist to assist students in successfully developing effective study strategies and other critical student skills to ensure they successfully navigate through the entirety of the academic program. The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will oversee programming to support students’ health and wellbeing and will liaise with students’ Whole Health Coaches in promoting students’ self-care. The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will ensure students’ compliance requirements are met, and process accommodation requests filed in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Additionally, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs will manage the organization of student events (Student Orientation, White Coating Ceremony, Match Day, Graduation, etc.). The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs will participate in the composition and/or review of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).

The position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor levels, depending on experience and qualifications.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific To The Position:
  • Remain up to date on current topics and behavioral trends affecting medical students
  • Develop campus-wide and peer-to-peer programs to support student issues and concerns, wellness activities, or other means of support to improve or enhance the student experience
  • Serve as an advocate and direct intervention mechanism for students experiencing times of crisis or hardship (including, but not limited to physical/mental illness or injury, substance abuse, or other threats to student wellness)
  • Work directly with the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs and the Director of Compliance to develop policies and procedures to immediately and appropriately address any cases of student misconduct, and serve as a victim advocate and/or primary point of contact for any student who experiences any form of misconduct perpetrated by a staff or faculty member, or another AWSOM student
  • Serve as the primary advocate for overall student health and wellbeing
  • Liaison with Whole Health Coaches to develop programs in support of students’ self-care
  • Develop and implement strategies and plans in cases of student emergencies. Ensure plans are consistent and compliant with other university initiatives. Prepare annual budget report for the Office of Student Affairs
  • Serve as the liaison between the AWSOM students and staff, faculty, and/or external entities
  • Supervise and support Office of Student Affairs staff in the administration of student events and activities (student orientation, ceremonies, clubs, workshops, graduation, etc.)
  • Assist in the development of student surveys, data collection, and outcome reports required for accreditation
  • Implement and evaluate the effectiveness of student programs and activities
  • Serve as a representative for AWSOM at student and community engagement activities
  • Assist in the development of program policies and procedures, and ensure that they are implemented and enforced consistently
  • Participate in various programmatic committees related to student education and advancement
  • Work with learning specialists to guide students in the development of study habits and other critical skills necessary for success in the medical school environment
  • Assist in the management of referrals to external services
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education
  • MD from an LCME accredited medical school and completed residency training from an ACGME approved program.
Minimum Work Experiences
  • Five years of experience in Student Affairs in an accredited medical school setting
  • Five years of managerial experience
Preferred Work Experiences and Qualifications
  • Ability to identify and address critical, and potentially subtle, student issues that may negatively impact academic performance, including those that may require psychiatric or other mental health care
  • Ability to identify and support the needs of a culturally and economically diverse population of students
  • Ability to organize both faculty and student-led study groups and workshops in order to enable students to develop effective learning and test-taking
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies and programs to enhance the student experience in medical school
