JOB DESCRIPTION

The Supervisor of Fine Arts which includes Visual and Performing arts (such as vocal, instrumental, performance, debate, forensics, dance, and theater) will work collaboratively with district staff to
  • Design, guide, and supervise services which ensure rigor, depth, complexity and challenge for the district's learners.
  • Develop plans for professional learning in the knowledge and practices in the instruction of the Arts.
  • The Supervisor will also ensure for all of the district's students, increased access to challenging courses, which enhance and broaden opportunities for greater future education and career options.
  • The Supervisor of Fine Arts will facilitate improvements in instructional practices based on National Core Arts Standards and best practices in Fine Arts and best practices throughout the total teaching and learning curriculum.
  • Provide strategic plan to support the Arts through collaboration with teachers and community partners to enhance the Art programs within the District's schools.
  • Organize central planning, financial planning, and communication of the District's Art exhibits and performances to the community.
  • Establishes and monitors an inventory of equipment for fine and performing arts.
  • Monitor, track and plan for short and long-term budget needs to support programs.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and regional organizations to promote the Fine Arts programs and in the District and enrich the opportunities for students to earn local, regional, and national recognition.
  • Collaborates with school vocal and instrumental directors for the selection, procurement and planning of annual performances.
  • Works under the general direction of the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning.
  • Work is subject to judgment in the performance of assignments. Work is subject to review based on results obtained and for conformance to laws, regulations, policies, rules and defined goals and objectives.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Education :

Master's Degree from an accredited college or university and coursework in curriculum, supervisory, performing arts, and administrative coursework.

Experience :

5 years of successful leadership experience (building leader/principal, assistant principal, and/or instructional coach). Significant K-12 urban leadership experience in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

Certification - Rhode Island Building Level Administrator Certificate

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES
  • Promotes incorporation and practice of literacy skills such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking through Fine & Performing Arts.
  • Recommend appropriate assessment for timely screening, diagnosis and progress monitoring for students in Fine Arts. Analyze student performance data to support appropriate planning and delivery of instruction in accordance with identified student needs.
  • Develops new curriculum and instructional units to support the instructional program in the schools while ensuring that instructional units support the scaffolding of skills; the use of planned sequences of instruction-including purposefully designed activities-will support students in acquiring skills in reading, writing and comprehension in the respective instructional program.
  • Plans and coordinates activities that involve parents, community and business sector in support of curriculum development, implementation and evaluation of fine arts programs in a manner that that reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the students and families that make up the school community and that support their school wide plans.
  • Manages programs, including summer and after school, related to Fine Arts with an emphasis on the integration of strategies to help students reach higher levels of proficiency and supported by strong parent and community engagement activities that enrich school wide plans.
  • Collaborate with parent engagement staff to establish quality programs for parents that support the Fine Arts.
  • Disseminate current research on Fine & Performing Arts best practices.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director of Teaching and Learning to plan for service and support of schools in Fine Arts Practices K-12.
  • Establish comprehensive data bases to track student performance data by level, school and type of services provided.
  • Collaborate with district staff to set consistent standards and expectations for the Fine Arts courses K-12.
  • Collaborate with district staff, universities, state and national organizations to provide and ensure district staff access to high quality professional development in Fine Arts programs and practices.
  • Collaborate with curriculum staff and principals to establish strategies and activities to ensure opportunities for increased student access to and performance on local and other rigorous competitions.
  • Conduct a district wide curriculum audit for all high schools to determine the number of courses available, average enrollment, course grade, number and percent taking and students receiving local, state and regional honors. Establish a database to monitor such statistics on an ongoing basis for both elementary and secondary.
  • Build and manage the budget for maximum support of programs and practices that ensure quality programs in Fine Arts.
  • Collaborate with curriculum staff and principals establish strategies and activities to provide opportunities for increased student access to, enrollment and performance in the Fine and Performing Arts at all secondary schools.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal guidelines.
  • Develop and monitor implementation of high quality services in the Arts for students in K-12.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in fine or performing arts, and/or coursework in curriculum, supervisory, and administrative coursework. Certification - Rhode Island Building Level Administrator Certificate and;
  • Successful recent leadership experiences in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
  • Experience in test development, curriculum development, and grant writing desirable.
  • Experience with computers and instructional technology application.
  • Experience using Arts technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Must have the knowledge and skills to build positive relationships with people from diverse populations
