6:00 am – 2:00 pm, Monday - Friday

SALARY:
1960.98-2255.84

DESCRIPTION:
Safely operates refuse and recycling trucks for the City of Lafayette. Conducts
pre-workday inspection of the trucks. Drives and rides on the side of the vehicle
during route collection. Operates two-way radio to communicate in a
professional manner. Collects route information concerning recycle, solid waste
and/or route problems and relays the information to the appropriate persons.
Completes daily inspection reports and fuels vehicle at the end of the day.
Cleans and washes truck and helps with routine vehicle maintenance. Maintains
cleanliness of inside of the vehicle at all times. Maintains route clean and free of
mess. Works some holidays and weekends. Serves on 24-hour call for
emergencies. Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
Extensive knowledge of the safe operation of all street vehicles in the municipal
fleet; thorough knowledge of street locations and traffic patterns for the City of
Lafayette; working knowledge of how to adapt work pattern to weather, i.e.,
working safely during snow and heat; ability safely to use materials common to
street maintenance work activities; Ability legally and safely to operate assigned
vehicles. Class B CDL is required. Related work experience may substitute for
education/training.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent’s duties may involve continuous physical exertion, such as
driving/sitting for long periods, standing/walking for long periods, walking on
uneven terrain, safely lifting/carrying object weighing 75 pounds, throwing
large/heavy objects over head, shoveling, raking, pushing/pulling objects. Vision
and hearing are required for driver’s and work crew’s safety. Prolonged intense
physical strain is not associated with normal duties.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors and in a vehicle, and is
frequently exposed to normal hazards associated with maintaining rights-of way,
such as machinery, traffic, noise, grease, and inclement weather. In responding
to emergency situations, incumbent may be exposed to such hazards as downed
power lines and/or fallen trees Safety precautions must be followed at all time to
avoid injury to self and others, including wearing protective gear as needed.
