About the Position

The Payroll Specialist is an integral member of the Finance Team. Working collaboratively with the People & Culture department, they have a main focus on processing payroll semi-monthly for over 275 full- and part-time employees. They also hold broader responsibilities of support to the other functions of the team.

Essential Job Duties

Payroll Processing

  • Review hours worked for each employee and manage workflow to ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely.
  • Reconcile and validate payroll prior to transmission.
  • Prepare and execute pay orders through direct deposit and generate paychecks.
  • Process correct garnishment and tax levy calculations and compliance.
  • Process manual checks for separated and terminated employees.
  • Interface with co-workers and outside vendors and handle employee payroll inquiries.


Department Responsibilities

  • In partnership with Accounting and People and Culture Teams continually improve the payroll process to increase efficiency, accuracy, and satisfaction.
  • Assist in improving CSC’s UKG instance.
  • Generate required reporting associated with payroll and conduct routine payroll audits.
  • Maintain current knowledge of current organizational as well as local, state, and federal payroll rules and regulations.
  • Prepare workers compensation reports for the insurance company and maintain current information on all workers’ compensation claims.
  • Manage 403b Plan contribution and ensure appropriate funding of staff accounts.
  • Prepare Oakland Zoo-wide daily operating revenue and performance report
  • Provide back-up support for Accounts Payable Specialist.

  • Solid computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office, simple spreadsheets, and data entry.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Oakland Zoo requires vaccination*

Bonus If You Have

  • At least 2 years of payroll processing experience
  • Experience with UKG/UltiPro
  • CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) and/or Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree
