This is a skilled mechanic position in the County Highway Department performing skilled mechanical work installing, assembling, testing, maintaining and repairing a variety of highway construction and maintenance apparatus and equipment. Employees in this class often make independent decisions and judgments in exercising the skills of the trade.

This is a full-time position working the following hours, and will include overtime:
-Winter: Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:00pm
-Summer: Monday-Thursday, 6:00am - 4:00pm

Wage Range: $24.62 - $28.53/hr

Installs, assembles, tests, adjusts, maintains and repairs machines or mechanical apparatus and equipment.

Removes worn or broken parts and replaces with new or repaired parts.

Oils, cleans, maintains and performs repair work on gas and diesel engines and electric motors.

Troubleshoots hydraulic and electrical problems, repairs tires.

Solders, welds or forges metal.

For testing purposes or as part of the job, operates various types of machines, appliances and equipment.

Uses diagnostic software and hardware to test, repair, and program all types of equipment and attachments.

Documents daily work in the shop fleet management software and the shop payroll system.

Physical demands: Frequently bends, carries and lifts with occasional heavy lifting. Lifts and carries tires, mechanical equipment and other supplies. Crawls under and on equipment. Mechanical hazards are a factor. Uses hands for carrying and using, tools such as wrenches, hammers, etc. Reads instructions and writes reports. Uses verbal communication with other workers. Uses near vision for tools and far vision for driving. Uses judgement to analyze mechanical problems and to prioritize work. Tasks may involve exposure to blood/body fluids.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools and techniques used in mechanical work.

Considerable knowledge of the mechanical principles by which machines and equipment operate.

Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Considerable knowledge in the use of computers and engine analyzers.

Working knowledge of the characteristics of metal and other materials, such as strength, toughness workability, etc.

Ability to work from oral or written instructions or from sketches or blueprints.

Skill in the use of hands and hand tools; manual dexterity.

Training, Experience and Other Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school, or GED.
  • A combination of training at a technical school in gas and diesel engines along with paid work experience as a diesel mechanic. The combined education and experience must equal 3 years or more.
  • Preference for experience working on diesel powered heavy equipment.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium Heavy Duty Truck Technician Certification or Automotive Technician Certification preferred.
  • Computer skills to utilize parts and equipment repair manuals on CD-ROM.
  • Previous experience doing road grading/snow plowing is desired.
  • Availability to work overtime as needed.
  • Valid Wisconsin drivers license and good driving record.
  • Must obtain Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake, combination vehicle and tanker endorsements within six-months from start date of employment.
  • Must have own mechanic's tools.
  • May consider other relevant combination of experience and training.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen due to CDL requirements.
