JOB SUMMARY

The registered professional nurse provides comprehensive patient care through the nursing process in any assigned area. Cooperates with other members of the health team in meeting patients’ total needs. Directs and guides patient teaching and activities of ancillary personnel while maintain standards of professional nursing.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS

  • Accountable to: The Director of Nursing, Nurse Manger and Charge Nurse.
  • Workers supervised: Ancillary nursing personnel of the assignment unit.
  • Interrelationships: patients, families, physicians, supervisors, nursing department employees and other employees of the hospital.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Holds current license to practice nursing in the State of Missouri.
  • Previous hospital experience or recent graduate from an RN program.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY

  • Direct Patient Care.
  • Assesses physical, psychological and social dimensions of patients.
  • Collects and assesses data about the health status of patient in a systematic and continuous manner.
  • Applies knowledge of illness, injuries and diseases using available resources in the assessment of the patients.
  • Summarizes assessment data, establishes priorities of problems and communicates data to other health team members.
  • Anticipates learning needs and assesses patient and family knowledge of disease, illness and self-care.
  • When working in the ER the RN should do the triage if at all possible. If the RN is unable to perform the triage, then she/she should follow the policy, “Co-signatures of ER records.”
  • Plans a formal, written plan of care for patients.
  • Initiates a plan based on identified medical and nursing care problems and applies knowledge of specific illnesses, injuries, diseases, human behavior and appropriate standards of care.
  • Involves patient and/or family and significant others in setting goals and planning care.
  • Utilizes all available resources and consults as necessary with physicians, supervisors, peers, etc.
  • Incorporates learning needs of patients and/or family into individualized plan of care.
  • Initiates discharge planning according to written hospital policy.
  • Applies principles of organization and management in utilizing knowledge of skills of other nursing personnel.
  • Implements plan of care
  • Assists patient care to commensurate with qualifications of nursing staff, the identified needs of the patients (classification of patients according to severity; see policy and procedure in nursing manual), and with the prescribed medical regimen.
  • Implements clinical and technical aspects of plan of care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet individual needs of patient.
  • Implements medical plan through passing medications and intervention with physician orders.
  • Documents nursing intervention, patient response, effectiveness, complications, etc., communicates information to peers and physician.
  • Collaborates with other members of other departments in meeting the total needs of the patient.
  • Respects dignity and confidentiality of patient, serving as an advocate as necessary and providing a safe and secure environment for the patient.
  • Functions within limits of State Nurse Practice Act, hospital and nursing department policies and procedures. Provides care and demonstrates skills comparable to peer with similar training and experience functioning under similar training and experience functioning under similar circumstances.

  • Acts as resource person regarding patient care, specialty areas, orientation and teaching of staff.

  • Communicates with patients, peers and other health team members in a concise, tactful and considerate manner.
  • Assumes responsibility for a “leadership role” nurse when designated or in the absence of the charge nurse-that is:
  • Assigns nursing staff to specific patients based on patient needs, qualification of ancillary staff and unit needs after patient assessment.
  • Maintains cooperation between nursing personnel, medical staff, patients and other hospital departments.
  • Investigates and intervenes in problem situations and reports appropriate information to charge nurse, nurse manager, Director of Nursing, physician, etc.
  • Coordinates unit routines and activity.
  • Other Behavior Factors.
  • Assist in the overall operation of the nursing unit.
  • Assists with dietary and housekeeping tasks, when necessary, according to hospital policy.
  • Provides a safe and comfortable environment for patients.
  • Assumes responsibility for safe and efficient use of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains a good attendance record.
  • Maintains a professional department at all times.

Inservice Education

  • Attends required inservice training programs.
  • Attends the required number of Inservice Meetings per year.
  • Maintains current BLS certification.
  • Obtains ACLS certification within one year of employment.
  • Completes Care Learning competencies via computer annually
  • Complete various nursing competencies on an annual basis.

Maintains CONFIDENTIALITY of all pertinent patient care information to ensure patient rights are protected.

PERFORMANCE AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Responsibilities: Adequate performance of assigned duties.
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use of prosthetic that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients, physicians, personnel and support agencies.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to operate equipment, as necessary, for smooth flow of work.
  • Must be able to speak the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Physical demands: Strength and endurance, as duty requires standing, walking, bending, lifting and pushing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works indoors in well-lighted areas and rooms.
  • Possibility of cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment.
  • Maybe be exposed to communicable diseases.
  • Possibility of strains due to moving patients or injury from irrational patient.

WORKING VARIABLES

  • Works in areas to include Emergency Department and Med-Surg Nursing.
  • In staff emergencies, will be able to work on alternate shifts and/or rotating job schedules or similar activities, at intervals, for limited periods of time.
