Library Clerks perform a variety of tasks related to the handling of Library materials, use of various computer software programs, organization of records, handling money, and most importantly, assisting and working directly with the public, including both children and adults to provide excellent service to our customers.

As a substitute, work will be required at all library locations, which include: Onalaska, Holmen, West Salem, Campbell and Bangor, to fill in for absences of regularly scheduled staff. Hours are based on need, usually ranging from 15-20 per week, and typically the need is greater during summer months. Hours will include weekdays, evenings and some Saturdays.

Essential Job Functions

Waits on library customers. Recommends materials for customer use. Helps customers locate or utilize library items.

Uses library software to perform steps related to checking materials in and out, reserving materials, inter-library loan services, delivery check-in, serials processing, and revenue collection.

Returns library materials to shelves or racks as needed.

Handles records related to lost materials, damaged materials and fines.

Collects money and makes change.

May assist with monitoring collection accounts.

Cleans and mends items when needed.

Assists customers in the use of computerized public catalog and other resources including Microsoft Office.

Assists customers with printing, scanning and faxing.

Utilizes Internet reference sources and may assist customers in same.

Promotes library services and programming through direct communication with customers and with marketing materials including social media. Creates documents including display signs, marketing materials, newspaper articles and other publicity pieces using Microsoft Office products.

Maintains reference statistics and track use utilizing Excel.

Handles specialized clerical assignments as the department's needs require.

Participates in committee work as assigned.

If assigned to the Youth Services Area: Will work at the public service desk, distribute materials to library locations, assist with statistics, inventory control, orders supplies, assist with publicity layout using MS Office products (Publisher, Word, Excel), creates props and other program materials, sets up displays, sets up and takes down program room furniture and related items.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the operation of a library system, including Dewey Decimal and other methods for organizing media.
Ability to use good customer service skills in working with the public.
Ability to utilize computers, copiers, and other office equipment.
Ability to perform tasks related to computer functions, record keeping, and handling of cash with great accuracy.

Training, Experience and Other Requirements

High school graduation or equivalent. Post-high-school education is helpful.
Enthusiastic Customer Service Skills are essential.
Strong organizational skills; accuracy in performing duties; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Must be available for evening and Saturday hours.
Must be bondable.
Skill in MS Office products (Publisher, Excel and Word).


Benefits for this position depend on the number of hours worked.

  • If the position is full-time, then benefits would be available.
  • If the position is part-time, then limited benefits would be available (this would not include insurances unless 30 hours per week or more).
  • If the hours are less-than-half-time, then there are no benefits available.
