The Cellular Translational Research Core (CTRC) is searching for a Lab Specialist who wants to work with stem cells at the University of Utah. This technician will be primarily responsible for cell culture work related to generating and maintaining induced-pluripotent stem cell lines, as well as differentiating stem cells into a variety of cell-type-specific lineages. Responsibilities also include helping CTRC staff perform gene editing approaches using cutting-edge CRISPR technologies, flow sorting edited stem cell lines to isolate manipulated clones. This position will be fun and rewarding experience, but due to the exactness required, will take dedication to do the job well.

Responsibilities
  • Must work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Be able to lift 40lb boxes or equipment.
  • Perform literature searches for potentially useful cutting-edge techniques that can be incorporated into our lab to benefit CTRC customer.
  • Identify key protocols, follow or modify if necessary, and apply these methods to meet our lab’s specific needs.
  • Performs tests and procedures using sophisticated laboratory equipment.
  • Must have skilled hands, be technically precise and meticulous with experimental details.
  • Because our core facility interacts closely with a large number of investigators, professionalism and excellent customer service is expected.
  • Having a good understanding of research ethics is important.
  • It is required that this technician can listen and clearly communicate with customers in a friendly, knowledgeable, accurate, and timely manner.
  • A high level of quality control is important. Proper labelling, sample identification and tracking needs to be maintained at 100%.
  • Human culture work needs to be performed under sterile conditions, avoiding contamination at all costs.
  • Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials. Must be able seek out competitive quotes for reagents and supplies to save our customers as much money as possible.
  • Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
  • Summarizes monthly spreadsheets containing billing information.
  • Have competent computer skills.
  • Identify ways the lab can conserve reagents and supplies, yet be as productive as possible.
  • It is expected this staff will work Monday-Fridays. However, stem cells need to be fed on a daily basis, even weekends. Some weekend work is therefore available. Once this staff is fully trained, they can cover weekend work if they choose to. Due to the flexible nature of weekend work, it can be performed at any time the candidate desires.

Problem Solving
This position assists senior laboratory personnel in planning methods and techniques. Work requires exercising independent judgment and basic theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. This position may include limited supervision of entry-level laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent. If incumbent cannot find a resolution, the situation is referred to the supervisor.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
Nearly Continuously: Office environment.
Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).
Seldom: Exposure to animals.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required
Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.
Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.
Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency; two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.

Prior laboratory bench work is preferred. Prior cell culture experience, especially with human cell lines is preferable.
