Job Title: Deputy National Director of Campaigns
Department: Program Department, Campaigns Unit
Location: Remote/Flexible
Reports To: National Director of Campaigns
Supervises: 2-5 Senior Staff

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.

Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope: This is a senior position that will support and manage the teams leading Sierra Club’s campaigns to address climate disruption; transform the energy economy; protect communities, particularly most-impacted communities, from pollution; ensure access to the outdoors for all; and protect our lands, water and wildlife. In addition to managing 2-5 senior staff - the role will have a seat on other leadership bodies across the Program Department and organization.

The Deputy National Director of Campaigns works closely with the National Director of Campaigns to develop and implement the vision, structures, systems, and culture needed to foster cooperation and collaboration across the Campaigns unit and between the unit and other units and departments. The Deputy National Campaign Director will also undertake special projects as needed and provide support to senior staff and volunteers to ensure they are oriented to engage with movement partners who represent those most impacted by the urgent challenges of climate, pollution and racial/economic injustice. The Deputy Director will help to integrate and align campaigns to the organization’s strategic framework and values of equity and justice, allowing us to deliver transformative shifts. This will include further integration of movement and power-building work within the Campaigns unit and unit-wide efforts to enhance staff fluency with key equity competencies.

The Deputy Director position is ideal for a leader able to demonstrate a deep commitment to social justice and understanding of how race and other identities intersect and affect the work of the Sierra Club. The ideal candidate has experience working with value-driven organizations, and a passion for dismantling white supremacist oppression, racism and colonialism in the transition away from extraction and exploitation towards regeneration. We are looking for a principled leader capable of acting with grace and seizing opportunities for relationship building, especially when navigating situations where tensions come to the fore.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure unit-wide communication, collaboration, and strategic coordination. Identify opportunities in the department to enhance communication, coordination, and collaboration across campaigns to implement an integrated climate strategy rooted in values of equity and justice. Design/implement mechanisms to build skills and competencies in equity, power building, strategic campaign planning, facilitation, management, and movement building across the unit, ideally with other units in the Program Department.
  • Manage and coach senior staff. Supervise, coach and mentor 2-5 direct reports including campaign directors by setting performance objectives, providing regular feedback and evaluation, and supporting these senior staff to excel. Work with direct reports to achieve their strategic outcomes and address performance concerns (including those related to equity) through professional development, coaching, and regular check-ins.
  • Serve as an effective ambassador. Foster strong working relationships and design and implement effective communication/consultation processes between the Campaign Unit and other departments, inspiring and engaging others across the organization to work towards shared strategic outcomes.
  • Serve as a senior staff leader. Serves as a member of a number of senior staff management bodies including the Leadership Team of the Campaigns Unit within the Program Department and the cross-departmental Council of Deputies. Provide regular strategic updates and program progress reports to the Sierra Club and the Sierra Club Foundation Boards as needed. Track opportunities to inspire and engage the board of directors and other senior leaders in campaigns.
  • Assist the National Director of Campaigns. With Director, oversee Campaign Leadership Team, establishing a shared vision, strategic priorities, structure, and culture towards increasingly transformative outcomes and monitoring progress towards annual results.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Successful Campaign/Field Manager. Demonstrated experience leading teams to implement shared vision/strategy, foster values-aligned culture, and design structures to carry out successful campaigns that engage, inspire, and build the power of members/communities.
  • Exemplary Supervisor and Coach. Demonstrated ability to develop, train and coach employees including senior staff. Strong candidates will bring a proven track-record of managing a large, distributed and diverse team coaching senior managers to address performance and equity issues and engage in conflict in a generative way.
  • Leader on Climate/Land/Energy/Justice. Content knowledge of at least 2 of the following: energy, land protection/conservation, international climate, and environmental/climate justice issues or the demonstrated ability to build that knowledge. Strong candidates will have skills working with or lived experience in communities most impacted by the extractive economy, fossil fuel industry, climate disruption, or colonialist land practices.
  • Skilled Communicator. Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Responsible for clear, compelling, personable, and timely written and oral communication to a broad array of audiences. Able to facilitate teams to achieve desired outcomes through effective meetings, memos, coordination documents and other communication systems.
  • Leading on Equity. You model effective equity analysis and practice and have a track record of operationalizing equity, and have embedded justice and equity throughout team/department policies, structures, culture, and programs in service of equitable and just outcomes.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

  • Organizational leadership experience and expertise identifying and organizing around strategic opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience in significant change management processes that required building buy-in and leading across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience and demonstrated effectiveness engaging and working with volunteer leaders and/or grassroots environmental justice community organizations.
  • Proven ability to integrate cutting edge data management and digital tools to inform strategy and track progress.
  • Fundraising experience including foundation relations, individual solicitation of major gifts, and grant-funded project development and oversight.
  • Fiscal oversight and budget management experience.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, across geographies, and with different types of volunteer and staff structures, exercising effective judgment in challenging situations and remaining calm under pressure.
  • A positive energy and good humor that engenders enthusiasm and collaboration.

Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving records, and proof of auto insurance required.
