We have an exceptional opportunity for a Dental Assistant 2 position at Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI) in Ontario, Oregon! The position has a shift of 10 hours per day and works only 4 days a week.

Position Overview
Your primary duties will be to facilitate patient dental care by providing direct assistance to the dentist while performing chairside procedures and to assure instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly maintained and available for patient care.
Duties in Detail
In this position you will provide direct chairside assistance to the dentist during dental procedures. Assures chairside skills conform and are optimized to treatment methodology of the assigned dentist, assuring patient safety, and maximizing clinic productivity. Frequent conversations regarding the dentist’s chairside expectations may be required resulting in immediate procedure modifications on the part of the assistant.
Records dental pathology and conditions on appropriate forms as assessed by the dentist. Performs the following EFDA duties as assigned by treating dentist:
  • Remove temporary crowns and prepare teeth for permanent crown cementation
  • Preliminary fit crowns and make adjustments outside the patient’s mouth
  • Place and remove matrix retainers for alloy and composite restorations
  • Remove excess cement from crowns (dentist must check afterwards)
  • Fabricate temporary crowns. Cement temporary crown with temp cement after approval from dentist. Dentist must check before patient released
  • When dentist is not available, re-cement temporary or permanent crown that has dislodged with temp cement. Dentist must check as soon as dentist is back in office
  • Place rubber dams and/or rubber dam clamps
  • Take alginate impressions
Manages dental materials, instruments, and equipment. Assures proper cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization procedures for instruments and equipment. Assures adequate stock of dental materials with proper expiration dates. Maintains dental hand pieces. Manages instrument inventory and security counts. Assures security is maintained over all instruments and equipment. Maintains dental burs as directed by assigned dentist. Prepares the dental operatory for patient treatment, assuring all infection control guidelines are followed; Assures proper instruments and supplies are set up in a neat and orderly fashion for specific dental procedures as directed by assigned dentist. Displays a working knowledge of all necessary dental materials. Coordinates maintenance and repair of equipment with DOC staff and contracted technicians. Conducts inventories; order tools and supplies as needed to assure adequate quantities available. Responds to written and verbal requests for treatment or coordinates response from provider. Assures treatment lists are accurate and current – Lists and other data may be kept in Microsoft word or excel formats, requiring the assistant to learn the applicable software. Schedules patients to be seen by providers. Assures information in the Inmate Health Plan (DOC 400) is accurate; reflects patients seen and treatments provided using appropriate predetermined dental abbreviations. Submits statistical data as directed by the provider. Coordinates with security staff to treat patients in isolated populations. Responds to requests for emergency treatment. Addresses questions from other DOC staff about dental treatment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One (1) year of support experience, six (6) months of which must be chairside dental assisting experience.
OR
  • A graduate of a dental assisting program AND possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation card AND Certification of Radiologic Proficiency AND certification by the Oregon State Board of Dentistry for expanded functions (EFDA).

Requires contact with inmates. Requires walking or standing for long period of time. Requires climbing and descending stairs. Possible exposure to chemicals, radiation, communicable diseases, or other hazards inherent in health care and correctional setting. Supervision and control of inmates in an inherent responsibility.
Requirements for Employment
You must be able to pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following convictions are likely to result in being disqualified for this position: felony convictions, computer theft, identify theft and fraud. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range.
