The Day Room Assistant provides and assists in planning and implementation of individual and/or group programs, and assists registrants with their ADL’s.

A. Education and Training - Must be eligible for or have successfully completed the New York State Department of Health mandated clinical and written/oral exams for Nurse's Aide certification and be a high school graduate.
B. Experience – Previous experience in a rehabilitative/geriatric setting or two (2) years working in a recreational therapy setting is preferred.
C. Character - Must possess good moral character, patience and compassion for the elderly.

III. Essential Job Functions
A. Read, write, speak, hear, reason and remember.
B. Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, and lift heavy weight (more than 51 lbs.)
C. Work independently or in conjunction with nursing and other rehabilitation personnel; ability to observe and assess resident's/registrant's condition and report findings accurately.
D. Perform all job duties and responsibilities as outlined below in IV.

IV. Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Day Room Assistant is supervised by the Dayroom Coordinator. The job duties and responsibilities are to be performed while observing the following standards: job standard (knowledge, ability, and skills), technical skill, quality, quantity, judgement/problem solving, decision making, and initiative. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

A. Communicate and write well to ascertain disabled registrants needs surrounding recreational activities needs and choices, document ADL's and activities per New York State Department of Health regulations.
B. Physically assist disabled registrants (minimal to total assistance needs) in the performance of scheduled recreational activities.
C. Provide activities of daily living and personal care to registrants according to plan of care.
D. Assist registrants with feeding, meal setup and serving meals and snacks. Additional tasks may include, but are not limited to engaging and assisting registrants with activities (arts & crafts, bingo, cards, games, etc.)
E. Maintain equipment for recreational activities.
F. Assist with the therapy programming under the supervision of licensed professional rehabilitative staff as needed.
G. Transport registrants to therapy in a timely manner.
H. Perform other related duties as required by their manager.

V. General Duties and Responsibilities
A. Participate in all department meetings, mandated inservices, and assigned committees.
B. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with registrants, family members, legal representatives and visitors.
C. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all personnel, including supervisors, co-workers and volunteers.
D. Follow all safety regulations and precautions at all times; use protective devices as required.
E. Wear and maintain proper uniform/clothing as established in the uniform dress code policy, including name tag identification. Maintain acceptable personal hygiene.
F. Maintain confidentiality and registrant rights.
G. Maintain confidentiality of all issues and subject matters, including records, reports, data and other related sensitive materials.
H. Maintain an acceptable attendance rate.
I. Follow all laws, rules and regulations of the Federal and NYS Health Codes in regard to the department and overall organization operations.

VI. Working Environment
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions and protection from weather conditions. The Day Room Assistant performs his job duties in the Day Room except when performing related duties throughout the program. The normal shift is 7½ hours. Overtime hours may be encountered. The program is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

VII. Exposure to Blood and Airborne Pathogens
This position has been categorized into Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Category 1: routine contact with blood/body fluids of persons living or non-living. Contact can be made while performing personal care, handling regulated medical waste and in clean up of spills and other blood/body fluid accidents. Protective equipment should be utilized when performing these tasks.
