Responsibilities:
  • Pleasantly greets each donor and checks against appointment list. If donor is a walk-in, updates list.
  • Ensures that baskets are filled with an assortment of cookies, coffee stirrers, cream and sugar, and napkins for the refreshment table(s).
  • Ensures that items be separated by potential contamination of many hands (example : pens should not be mixed with napkins or coffee stirrers) to decrease spread of communicable disease.
  • Ensures each donor drinks liquids after donating and before leaving the site. Provides water if soda, juice, or coffee are refused.
  • Ensures that canteen supplies are ordered and maintained at appropriate inventory levels.
  • Informs each donor to drink plenty of fluids for 24 hours following donation.
  • Observes donors to make sure each donor is sitting close to the table with donation arm extended and ensures the donor does not lean on their elbow.
  • Observes donor and has him/her keep their arm sleeves up until he/she is ready to leave.
  • Informs donors not to smoke for at least 30 minutes after donation.
  • After the donor leaves, checks table and chairs for cleanliness and refills baskets as needed.
  • Adheres to the following care to minimize or prevent a negative donor reaction:
  • Engages the donor in conversation.
  • Does not ask donors how they are feeling to avoid the power of suggestion.
  • If the donor becomes pale, begins to perspire, stares, blinks rapidly, looks down, and appears uncomfortable:
  • Attends to them by having him/her put head down on the table.
  • Pushes their chair in as close as possible to the table and calls for the Team Leader.
  • Adheres to the following care to minimize or prevent injury when a puncture site opens:
  • Hands the donor napkins and tells them to press firmly, applying pressure over the Band-Aid.
  • Calls the Team Leader and does not touch or attempt to clean any blood spill.
  • Adheres to the following care to minimize or prevent blood exposures:
  • Notifies Team Leader immediately and follows any instructions given for proper cleaning and documentation of the incident.
  • Ensures that each donor receives a heartfelt, simple thank you for their donation.
  • Must be knowledgeable and informative to donors on current incentive programs and special event drives.
  • Encourages the donor to schedule their next appointment and forwards this information to the appropriate department.
  • Ensures children of donors are safe and appropriately entertained.
  • May assist with special projects as time permits (stamping, labeling, clerical, collating, cleaning, etc.)
  • May be assigned other duties during special blood promotions or staffing shortages.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent the equivalent preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Able to deal effectively, patiently and pleasantly with all visitors and donors maintaining confidentiality and tact, good communicator in person, dependable, and possess a service-oriented attitude. required
