Duties:

1-60Deck Operations: As directed by the Chief Mate, this unlicensed vessel position is responsible for coordinating the daily work activities of unlicensed personnel within the Deck Department and facilitating and supporting the scientific mission of each voyage. The Bosun delegates work equitably within the department and tracks the work hours of unlicensed deck personnel. This position entails planning, scheduling, and leading maintenance of deck department spaces, decks, tools, equipment, machinery, small crafts, and associated gear. The Bosun is responsible for the operation of all non-engineering area deck machinery, and ensures adherence to safety guidelines, policies, and procedures. The Bosun will also operate deck equipment including winches, A-frames, cranes and davits to load and stow stores and scientific equipment. This position is also responsible for the instructing and training of all deckhands in safe and proper operation of the anchor windlass, capstans, cranes, winches and other deck machinery. This position will direct and assist in handling lines and operating capstans when mooring or unmooring from berths. The Bosun operates the windlass when anchoring. The Bosun will direct placement, rigging and setting of the gangway, and is responsible for properly lashing deck cargo and securing hatches.Essential
2-30Cleaning and Maintenance: The Bosun Performs routine preventative general maintenance of all interior and exterior areas including ship's hull, deck, bulkheads, and superstructure, and maintains sanitary cleanliness of the ship. This position is also responsible for maintaining accurate paint, tool, and deck supply inventories and recommending orders as necessary. The Bosun will recognize signs of equipment damage and is responsible for removing damaged equipment from service. The Bosun also maintains records of deck equipment, wire and usage logs, and must possess the ability to review ship's drawing and equipment technical manuals.Essential
3-10Safety: The Bosun is responsible for ensuring the safety of all hands involved in deck related operations through training, use proper safety equipment, and following safety procedures and guidelines. The Bosun will interpret and apply pertinent safety, environmental, regulatory rules and regulations, and is responsible for keeping the Chief Mate well informed. The Bosun will actively serve in duties as defined by the Master, as part of ship's safety management and emergency preparedness, and will participate in all emergency drills and situations. The Bosun is a member of firefighting and emergency response teams.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Advanced and pertinent knowledge and experience with safely over-boarding and recovering equipment at sea. Advanced deck equipment experience: crane, winch, davit and small boat launch, recovery and operation. Experience in preventive maintenance of deck equipment. Able to work non-standard flexible watch hours. Ability to stand watch as look-out, helm as part of a bridge navigation watch, and stand port security watches. Ability to operate small boats.

Typical Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent and at least 3 years working as Able Seaman and one year experience as Bosun. Candidates with research vessel experience are strongly preferred.

Required Education or Training:
  • Qualified applicants must possess the following valid credentials:
    • U.S. Passport
    • TWIC card
    • USCG Medical Certificate
    • U. S. Coast Guard (USCG), Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) with the following endorsements: Able Seaman-Unlimited, RFPNW, Lifeboatman, Able Seafarer -Deck, PSC, and Basic Training
    • First Aid and CPR certifications

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 76, based on education and experience.

Applicants will be required to provide documentation of participation in a random drug testing program for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. If not under employment, where a random drug testing program exists, the applicant shall provide a completed test indicating they are free of illegal substance abuse, when requested by Seward Marine Center, prior to employment. Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.

UAF COVID Requirements:
