Purpose of the job
- Provide necessary in-house legal services.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Required Work Experience
- At least 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney engaged in corporate, transactional, and/or contracting work
- 3 year(s) of experience in the health insurance or a related healthcare industry
Required Education
- Juris Doctorate
Required Licenses
- Active, current, and unrestricted license to practice law.
Required Certifications
- Admission to State Bar

- Expertise in information technology issues relevant to the health insurance/healthcare industry

ESSENTIAL job functions AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain and develop expertise in healthcare, insurance and information technology issues relevant to BCBSAZ and its affiliates.
- Draft, review and assist with negotiation of vendor, provider, employer and other contracts and related documents, as assigned.
- Provide legal advice to various BCBSAZ divisions/departments and affiliates, including statutory and regulatory compliance with state and federal laws.
- Participate on and provide legal advice to cross-functional teams responsible for implementing mandates and company goals and initiatives.
- Provide annual and ad-hoc training to BCBSAZ and its affiliates on various legal issues.
- Represent BCBSAZ at certain local and national conferences, as needed.
- Perform public speaking activities both internally and to community organizations concerning relevant legal issues.
- The position requires a full-time work schedule. Full-time is defined as working at least 40 hours per week, plus any additional hours as requested or as needed to meet business requirements.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

- Intermediate skill in use of office equipment, including copies, fax machines, scanner and telephones
- Intermediate PC proficiency
- Intermediate proficiency in spreadsheet, database, and word processing

- Analytical knowledge necessary to generate reports based on available data and then make decisions based on reported data
- Capable of legal and analytical research
