Assistant Page Program Supervisor (Nonpartisan) – December 2022 through April 2023

SALARY: $4,391 monthly

Legislative Profile:
The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually on the second Monday in January in the Capitol Building in Olympia. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed.

Our workplace is on the beautiful Capitol Campus in Olympia. The 486-acre campus includes the Legislative Building and other historic structures, as well as popular parks and trails with views of Capitol Lake, Budd Inlet, and the Olympic Mountains.

Duties

Page Program Profile:
During each week of the legislative session, 20-30 students ages 14-16 are chosen from across the state to serve as a Page for the Washington House of Representatives and participate in state government by becoming an employee for one 40-hour work week. Pages assist with the Legislature’s work by making deliveries, paging on the chamber floor, supporting member offices, and attending Page School. Page School supplements the hands-on learning experience with a classroom component geared toward understanding the legislative process. How You’ll Be Expected to Contribute:


  • Work cooperatively with the House Page Supervisor in managing Page responsibilities and maintaining an environment that is intellectually stimulating and respectful.
  • Answer phones, maintain attendance reports, and build rapport with pages, parents, and legislative staff.
  • Organize daily schedule including coordination with the Page School and Senate Page Program, and factoring in the Supreme Court docket, committee hearings, floor responsibilities, and other Page commitments and activities.
  • Collect an input hiring paperwork and other required documents.
  • Train Pages for their duties on the House floor.
  • Instruct and manage Page delivery of messages and other courier tasks.
  • Maintain flag bearer lists.
  • Assist in conducting Sunday orientations with Pages and page families.

Qualifications

The Successful Candidate Will Meet These Qualifications:


  • Familiarity with the Washington State Legislature.
  • Can remain non-partisan in a political environment.
  • Flexibility, patience, experience, and enthusiasm working closely with students ages 14-16.
  • Ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and interests.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team with staff while staying calm in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, MS Word, Outlook, and managing multiple phone lines.

Supplemental Information

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions:


  • This position requires an onsite/in-person presence and must be able to frequently work more than 40 hours per week or adjust normally scheduled hours, which includes evening, weekends, and holidays during session.
  • This position requires ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
Benefits:
This position is not eligible for benefits due to the employment duration.
