Reassignment Qualifications: You must be a current Department of Agriculture and Markets employee and have one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service as an Animal Health Inspector 1, G-14; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current eligible list for this location, if one exists.

Reinstatement Pursuant to Rule 5.4: Permanent employees who have resigned their positions may be reinstated to their former positions, or to positions to which they were eligible for transfer or reassignment without further examination. Employees separated from their positions may be reinstated within one year of the date of their separation. Employees separated from their positions who have also been separated from state service for more than one year may be reinstated upon approval by the state civil service commission.

Provisional Appointment: If there is no appropriate eligible list of at least three people willing to accept permanent appointment for this geographic location, the Department may nominate a qualified person for a provisional appointment under the provisions of Section 65 of the Civil Service Law.

  • Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained.

Provisional Appointment Qualifications: Possession of a license to practice as a Veterinary Technician from the New York State Education Department. This license needs to be current. You must also have an associate degree plus 18 or more credit hours in specialized courses relating to animal health science, veterinary technology, animal husbandry or animal science.
Duties Description

As an Animal Health Inspector 1, under the direction of a State Veterinarian, you would perform inspections at pet dealer facilities, municipal shelters, and premises where livestock and poultry are kept, and collect samples for routine surveillance of various animal diseases. You would also review records of livestock dealers and poultry facilities and assist veterinarians in animal disease control programs.

Division of Animal Industry:

The Division of Animal Industry is responsible for surveillance for animal diseases of significance to agriculture; control and eradication of infectious and contagious diseases in New York State livestock and poultry; implementation of pre-harvest food safety measures at the farm level; public health; food safety and security; and animal care.

The highest priorities for this Division are protecting the health of New York’s animal populations, protecting the health of people who depend on those animals, and cooperating with other states and the US government to guard against diseases that threaten to interrupt interstate and international commerce in animals and animal products.
