Who We Are

The Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) is a grassroots nonprofit based out of Juneau, Alaska, in the Tongass National Forest.

For more than 50 years SEACC has been a regional conservation watchdog defending the remaining intact old-growth stands of the Tongass National Forest and the vibrant waters of the Inside Passage. We partner with local communities, Tribes, fishermen, businesses, and visitors to advocate for the conservation and sustainable use of our region’s natural resources, and preserve a uniquely Southeast Alaskan way of life. We mix policy and technical expertise with local knowledge, grassroots organizing, and strategic communications to engage the public, maintain existing protections and advance new policy so that we ensure the interconnected whole of Southeast Alaska exists for future generations.

Áak’w Ḵwáan Area/Juneau Community Organizer

SEACC’s Áak’w Ḵwáan Area /Juneau Community Organizerrole is a new, full-time, non-exempt position, and is funded for two years to start, with the opportunity for continued employment contingent on funding.

What You’ll Do

The Áak’w Ḵwáan Area /Juneau Community Organizer is responsible for ensuring SEACC provides a coordinated, engaged response across all development-related activities in the greater Juneau area, spanning from new or discontinued undeveloped mine project exploration, to tourism-related expansion, to transportation development. As part of their role working on transportation, this team member will lead SEACC’s advocacy in support of the Alaska Marine Highway, or ferry system.

The Áak’w Ḵwáan Area/Juneau Community Organizer’srole will be to propose, plan, coordinate, communicate, advertise, and help lead community-wide conversations around the community’s continued development and expansion, and will work to ensure that residents and members of the public have a say in whether, when, where, and how these developments take place and are advanced.

SEACC’s Áak’w Ḵwáan Area/Juneau Community Organizer will attend local Assembly meetings, host and attend meetings and events with partner groups and, in some cases, attend events and meetings at the legislature, and will coordinate information sharing and highlight opportunities for comment submission or feedback to decision-making and advisory bodies. As such, this role requires flexibility to work after a typical 9-to-5 workday, and will sometimes require work on weekends, as do most roles at SEACC.

This position is being created to ensure that Juneauites have a stronger voice in the way the community develops and to help ensure that decision-making entities are responsible and responsive to residents of Juneau. The Organizer’s narrow focus on Áak’w Ḵwáan Area/Juneau area development will help push for integrated community planning, and cumulative effects management, and will work to incorporate a long-term vision for Juneau’s future into development decisions being made today.

Examples of ongoing, upcoming, or recent development projects that SEACC’s Áak’w Ḵwáan Area /Juneau Community Organizermight work on include but are not limited to: funding and other proposed changes for the Alaska Marine Highway System, including with regards to the proposed Cascade Point ferry terminal; the Norwegian Cruise Lines/Huna Totem proposed dock development project; the proposed Second Crossing from Douglas to Juneau; proposed expansions at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center; early mine exploration at Herbert River Trail; proposed new development and expansion on Douglas Island and at and around Eaglecrest Ski Area, new recreational trail and cabin development, etc.

In addition, this role will be responsible for helping coordinate with partner organizations on Áak’w Ḵwáan Area/Juneau Community area conservation and development issues that fall outside of SEACC’s core program areas, but within our mission and vision.

Reporting

This role reports to the Inside Passage Waters Program Manager and works particularly closely with SEACC’s Communications Lead and Development and Outreach Associate, in addition to other SEACC staff. They will be based out of our Áak’w Ḵwáan Area /Juneau physical office, at 2207 Jordan Ave.

· Someone who is knowledgeable about and engaged with Southeast Alaska Indigenous cultures, languages, and communities. The community organizer position connects and builds relationships with Native groups, Tribal representatives, Native corporations, and Indigenous community members and leaders to further conservation and equity objectives.

Overall, we are looking for someone who is a people-person, ready to organize with energy and enthusiasm, creative, organized, a strong public speaker and communicator, and a self-starter.

Compensation: This role is a full-time, non-exempt position, and the pay range for this role is between $44,000 TO $55,000 annually with the exact salary dependent upon experience. The role can be an entry-level position scaled for someone beginning their career in community advocacy and engagement, or for someone more experienced, and the range is scaled to allow for flexibility in experience level.

· 3 weeks of paid leave your first year and 4 weeks of paid leave after one year, plus

Where you will work: SEACC’s office is located in Áak’w Ḵwáan Area/Juneau, Alaska. This position will be located in Juneau and is not eligible to work fully remote (e.g., not suitable for a candidate based in another community, with no plans to relocate).

More about Juneau, Alaska: Áak’w Ḵwáan Area/Juneau is the ancestral home of the Áak’w Ḵwáan and Taku Ḵwáan peoples. It is also the state’s capital city. Áak’w Ḵwáan Area /Juneau is surrounded by the Tongass National Forest and is rich with access to the outdoors, including fishing, hunting, foraging, kayaking, biking, hiking, and skiing, among other activities. We have two public swimming pools, multiple fitness clubs, a city-owned ski mountain, many city parks and libraries, and a variety of educational options for families of all ages. Juneau also has a vibrant arts community with numerous visual artists, dance troupes, theatre companies, two opera companies, chamber and symphony orchestras, a jazz and classics festival, and an annual folk music festival, as well as the Alaska State Museum and Sealaska Heritage Institute. Juneau has a robust and growing Indigenous arts and culture scene, and the biennial Alaska Native cultural event Celebration is held every two years in Juneau and is a major social and cultural event, with the next slated to occur in summer 2024.

Our city is famous for its rainy and often gray coastal climate and is only accessible by air travel or by boat, including the state ferry system.
