Overview:
WaterOne's Accounting team is responsible for preparing financial reports, performing account reconciliations, maintaining the general ledger, preparing tax documents, assisting with audit preparations, and completing financial analysis. The Accountant is responsible for assigned daily accounting tasks and data collection, as well as performing operational and financial analysis and providing advisement to other departments on the proper steps to take in the various SAP modules. The Accountant will use technical and analytical skills either individually or as a team member to provide information to the Manager - Accounting.

Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
  • Maintain a general knowledge of generally accepted accounting rules as well as those accounting rules that may be unique to municipality.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of WaterOne’s Kansas enabling statute and applicable Federal and Kansas tax law.
  • Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
  • Maintains and balances sub-ledger accounts by verifying, allocating, and reconciling transactions. Resolves discrepancies between sub-ledgers and controlling accounts.
  • Responsible for assisting in the month-end FI/Controlling closing process including, but not limited to: settling work orders and projects, running overheads and executing cost allocations.
  • Responsible for the payment disbursement process to vendors including but not limited to checks, ACHs, and use of an AP card.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of the monthly financial statements including water production and customer consumption statistics and a cash flow reconciliation.
  • Assist Internal Audit staff regarding Internal Audit’s quality assurance review of financial and operational transactions.
  • Update financial data in databases to ensure that information will be accurate and available when needed. Perform operational analysis of various business processes throughout WaterOne.
  • Participate in formal and informal training of WaterOne personnel in areas of budget versus actual, capital expenditure analysis, and purchasing/accounts payable processes.
  • Assist in the annual update and review of WaterOne’s Overhead Composite Rates and Cost Standards.
  • Assist in maintaining a database on WaterOne’s real property including the market value and tax assessment of each property.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for various modules within the SAP system. May liaison with other Departments at WaterOne regarding their operational SAP modules.
  • May assist in the monitoring for sales tax rate changes for the multiple jurisdictions that WaterOne operates in and assists in the preparation of the monthly sales tax return for the State of Kansas.
  • May assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of fiscal policies, procedures, and practices.
  • May assist in the process of issuing bonds, including document preparation and review of legal documents related to the bond issue.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • This position offers an optional hybrid work schedule (remote and onsite) as determined by the manager.
Qualifications:
Required Education, Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance.
  • At least 2 years of professional accounting experience.

Note: An equivalent combination of education, experience, and professional certification may be considered in fulfilling requirements 1 and 2.

  • Ability to exercise initiative and critical self-review.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and maintain a high level of accuracy under fluctuating or heavy workloads.
  • Knowledge of and experience with a variety of accounting cycles such as cash, accounts payable and capital expenditures.
  • Skills and experience in various PC applications including spreadsheets and graphics.
  • Ability to pass a post-offer medical exam, including drug screen and background investigation (may not apply to current employees).


Preferred Education, Skills & Experience
  • Utility and/or audit related accounting experience.
  • General knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and procedures, including FASB and GASB pronouncements.
  • Experience with SAP or similar ERP system.
