Work involves the responsibility for the care of all taxa and the maintenance of sanitary conditions of buildings, grounds and enclosures. Incumbent checks diets and prepared foods prior to distributing them to the animals; cleans and disinfects buildings, cages and other facilities housing animals; keeps drains free; reports needed repairs to facilities, exhibits and grounds; reports observations on the animals to supervisors and deals with the public as public relations agent while also protecting the public and the animal collection.

Cares for, and provides food and water for, the animal collection at designated times; observes the health of the animals and reports unusual behavior or other irregularities to the lead keeper. Assists in exhibitory set-up and in the catching, and crating of animals . Keeps watch for any vandalism or possible mistreatment of the collection. Participates in zoo training programs. Other duties as assigned.

Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Some knowledge of the care and feeding of mammal s, reptiles and/or birds represented in the zoo.

Some knowledge of the methods and techniques used in general maintenance repair and cleaning of zoo facilities. Working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in the work and the proper safety precautions for the safe performance of the job.
Ability to work with animals. Ability to detect signs of illness in animals. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments.
Skill in routine care of animals. Sufficient manual dexterity to develop skill in the care and use of tools, equipment and facilities used in the work. Ability to physically lift and carry items of approximately 50 pounds on a routine basis.

Minimum Education and Training:
High School graduate or equivalent (college degree preferred) and at least (2) years experience in custodial care of animals.
