The News Tribune seeks a smart, energetic visuals editor to join its award-winning newsroom in Tacoma, one of America’s most diverse and fast-growing communities.

Our next visuals editor will focus on managing the visuals staff at The News Tribune and The Olympian as well as shooting, editing and producing original photo and video content across multiple platforms.

We are headquartered in Tacoma, Washington, a lively region for news and an interesting place to live. Our community is growing, with up-and-coming restaurants, breweries, thriving museum and theater districts and myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation, from water sports to mountaineering. We’re uniquely located near three national parks — Mount Rainier being our favorite — and the Sound. The big-city lights of Seattle are only 30 miles away.

In our visuals editor, we’re seeking a versatile and resourceful journalist who can produce daily and long-term photo and video stories. Visual journalists play a critical role, working closely with newsroom colleagues to tell the most important and timely stories. A strong work ethic, the ability to multi-task and the aptitude to work across short- and long-term deadlines is required.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $65k and $75k. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography and local wage and hours laws.

In this role, you will need to:

• Hire, manage and collaborate directly with visual staff in Tacoma and Olympia and occasionally with our sister properties in Bellingham, Tri-Cities and Boise, Idaho

• Collaborate with editors and reporters to develop creative approaches to digital storytelling and prioritize coverage needs

• Generate ideas for daily photos and video stories that appeal across local and statewide online audiences

• Report, edit and produce compelling video journalism on deadline

• Shoot live video when warranted

• Write headlines, captions, summaries, social media posts and stories that are engaging and accurate

• Shoot photographs to accompany video storytelling in digital presentations and for print

The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:

• College degree preferred.

• At least five years of digital journalism, including familiarity with DSLR and professional video cameras, capturing sound and video editing.

• Must have reliable transportation. Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).

• Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.

• Commitment to ethics.

• Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories. Team player skills required. Leadership, strategic thinking experience and the ability to work with colleagues are essential.

• Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.

This position will be based in Tacoma and will report to the Executive Editor. The position may involve working nights and/or weekends. Some travel may be required.
