Founded in 1893 as a land-grant university, Montana State University is composed of ten academic colleges and a graduate school. Currently, the University hosts an enrollment of over 16,900 students at its main campus, including approximately 1,980 graduate students. The graduate program encompasses 61 master’s degrees, 43 doctoral degree options, and 13 certificate options. Montana State has seven research agricultural centers and 94 MSU Extension agents that serve every county and tribal nation in Montana.
Montana State University has the largest and most varied research portfolio in Montana and neighboring states. In fiscal year 2022, Montana State opened 689 new sponsored program grants and had over $200 million in research expenditures, with major areas of research excellence in agriculture, biomedicine and health care, economics, education, energy, mental health, nanotechnology, optics, and photonics.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Vice President of Research and Economic Development is charged with the following duties and responsibilities:
Provide and implement a vision for strengthening and expanding Montana State University’s research enterprise consistent with the University’s Strategic Plan;
Oversee the University’s research and economic development units, including: (1) Office of Sponsored Programs, (2) Technology Transfer Office, (3) Office of Research Compliance, (4) Office of Research Development, (5) Office of Economic Development, (6) Centers and Institutes; and (7) Core Facilities;
Engage in effective and transparent decision-making in consultation with key stakeholders, including but not limited to the President, Provost, Deans, faculty, and others as appropriate;
Provide leadership in the integration of learning, discovery, and engagement in cooperation with the academic leadership including the President’s Executive Team, Provost, Deans and Department Heads;
Lead efforts to effectively organize and identify funding for interdisciplinary, campus-wide research;
Pursue and promote federal and state support for strategic research and economic development initiatives;
Oversee and Advise Core Facilities, Research Centers, and Research Institutes;
Promote the importance and creative value of faculty research to the broader community;
Work collaboratively and cooperatively with the Montana State University’s Innovation Campus;
Participate in the Coalition of EPSCoR/IDeA states and EPSCoR/IDeA Foundation.
Coordinate important partnerships and collaborations across the region and nation with communities, labs, industry, non-profits, government, and with other academic institutions;
Foster successful partnerships and collaborations between the private sector, the MSU Alumni Foundation, and Montana State University Faculty;
Support patent applications and assist in establishing licensing agreements for Montana State University technologies;
Support scholarship that drives improvements in lives and society through mutually beneficial community partnerships to develop and exchange new knowledge, improve economies and organizations, and increase social and economic capital;
Chair Montana State University’s Research Council;
Maintain the integrity of the research enterprise by ensuring compliance with university, state and federal policies and regulations.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Earned doctorate or equivalent degree from an accredited institution;
Rank of full professor or record justifying appointment at that level or title equivalent to senior research manager in industry, non-profit, or government;
Demonstrated effectiveness in administration and management of a complex institutional organization or unit;
Demonstrated record of excellence in progressive levels of leadership, responsibility and expertise in research administration at a major research university, organization or government agency;
Outstanding, nationally recognized record of scholarship and success in attracting competitive research funding along with experience in leading multidisciplinary research/creative initiatives;
Must be able to obtain a U.S. national security clearance through Department of Defense and Department of Energy; and
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member in a diverse, collaborative campus environment and provide effective leadership to enhance the increasing diversity and global character of Montana State University.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Demonstrated excellence in leading or participating in a complex organization with a broad focus across disciplines;
Experience in cultivating diversity in research and education and fostering development of faculty research programs;
Comprehensive understanding of the role a public land-grant university serves to enhance the vitality of the region and the state, and of the importance of research, creative activity, and scholarship across the university;
Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in technology transfer activities and startups, collaborating with industries, and working actively with state and local government;
Ability to articulate the university’s vision for research, creative activities, and technology transfer that represents the diverse disciplines of a land-grant university; and
Demonstrated excellence in graduate student education/mentoring.

The Successful Candidate Will
Show evidence of accomplishments requisite for a senior faculty appointment in one of the schools in the college; proven record of leadership as a faculty member, scholar, creative artist/designer, and administrator
Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Working with a host of dedicated and accomplished faculty, they will be someone who can lead and support the faculty and students in nationally-accredited programs to capitalize on the rich array of academic experiences, research opportunities, and creative activities unique to the expertise and accomplishments of the faculty
Experience fostering academic student success and implementing retention practices
Maximize the opportunities present in a university with dynamic science and technology activities
