Job description
- Performs data entry to record information from taxpayers to list and assess taxes on real and personal property
- Prepares abstracts, property record cards and/or other source documents; assists business owners, accountants, and others in compiling tax listings; reviews building permits
- Reviews and compares previous year's tax listings, assigns trending schedules, and verifies depreciation schedules submitted
- Researches and discovers unlisted personal property such as boats, mobile homes, business property, airplanes, and unregistered vehicles
- Sends correspondence to owners advising of need to list property
- Appraises mobile homes, airplanes, boats, registered and unregistered motor vehicles according to manual, and enters data into appraisal reports
- Performs other related duties
- Provides excellent customer service skills
Depending upon the area of assignment, employees are required to complete the North Carolina Fundamentals of Property Tax Listing and Assessing Course or the North Carolina Fundamentals of Property Tax Collection Course within 24 months of hiring date
Negative drug screen and background check are required.

Successful completion of Basic Excel and Basic Word tests will be required. Candidates selected as qualified will be contacted via email by a Human Resource representative for testing.

Knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act and County tax policies concerning listing, assessment, collections, and billing

Knowledge of punctuation, grammar, spelling, and arithmetic

Knowledge of routine office practices, procedures, equipment, and standard clerical techniques, including a familiarity of popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs

Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures as related to the duties of the Tax Assistant
