SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMS COORDINATOR

Pay: $32.31 - $43.30 Hourly

Under general policy direction from the City Manager and technical direction from Community Development Manager, Sausalito’s Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of the City’s sustainability program to advance Sausalito’s sustainability vision and goals, as well as Council objectives. The incumbent will be responsible to plan, implement, develop metrics for, track, and make presentations and reports regarding the City’s efforts and projects related to City Council and City department sustainability goals and programs. This position also acts as the liaison for City sustainability programs; and performs related duties, as assigned.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will leverage their years of experience working in sustainability and environmental program development, coordination, and implementation to shape and guide the direction and practices of sustainable development and sustainability programs for the City of Sausalito. They will have an equivalent to completion of a four-year degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Sustainability Studies or a related field. The incumbent will help direct, plan, develop, administer, and evaluate Climate Action Program policies and procedures for the City. They will also educate City staff, the public, media, and governmental bodies on the benefits of implementing and maintaining environmentally and socially responsible operations. This candidate will represent the City in dealings with said parties to promote sustainability and eco-friendly programs, objectives and goals.

*Starting pay will be set within the range and commensurate with experience. Beginning on October 14, 2022, the City intends to move to a standard work schedule that is four, nine-hour days. The City will be open to the public Monday - Thursday and closed on Fridays. Where practical for the work, the City allows a day of telecommuting.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan, develop, administer, and evaluate program policies and procedures for the City’s climate action program which may include one or all of the following: adaptation, resiliency, sea level rise, bay shore habitat preservation, clean water, waste collection and diversion programs.
  • Foster positive working relationships with the community, program partners, and City departments to ensure these programs are successful.
  • Educate City staff and the public on the benefits of implementing and maintaining environmentally and socially responsible operations.
  • Actively engage and cultivate relationships with local and regional groups in the sustainability arena.
  • Identify climate hazards facing the City, examine City strengths and vulnerabilities, identify opportunities to enhance the City’s overall resiliency, and reduce consumption of natural resources by municipal / school services and residents.
  • Research, analyze and interpret related social, economic, population and land use data and trends as they pertain to Climate Change initiatives.
  • Support other environmental programs including, but not limited to, storm water reuse, integrated pets management, water conservation and reuse.
  • Identify, assesses viability of, and apply for relevant grants; review and interpret grant requirements, legislation, codes, and regulations; submit grant applications for a wide variety of environmental programs.
  • Develop and implement mechanisms to track progress in achieving the environmental sustainable goals and objectives.
  • Develop, monitor, and administer environmental programs budget; perform ongoing monitoring of expenditures to ensure compliance with budget provisions including contract administration, invoice processing and maintenance of support inventory for a variety of programs.
  • Oversee day-to-day administrative and operational activities of the sustainability program, including staff and volunteer supervision and development.
  • Evaluate proposed sustainability measures to prioritize investment through life cycle and cost/benefit analysis or other applicable metrics prior to implementation.
  • Track, monitor, and periodically report out on above metrics and the progress and known outcomes through the life cycle of sustainability programs.
  • Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and technology that may affect sustainability programs.
  • Manage the City’s contracts that pertain to sustainability. This includes but is not limited agreements such as for solid waste removal, recycling, communications towers, waste treatment and diversion, runoff, desalinization, habitat and shoreline restoration, and water conservation programs.
  • Implement policy and procedural changes as required.
  • Make presentations to community groups and organizations regarding programs, services and activities.
  • Attends various meetings, committees and conferences related to program goals and objectives.
  • Serve as a liaison for assigned programs with other City departments, public officials, regulatory bodies, the business community, members of policy and advisory boards, community and civic groups, and the public.
  • Serve on the City’s Emergency Operations Team during disaster and other emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of a degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Sustainability Studies or a related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience working in sustainability and environmental program development, coordination, and/or implementation preferably for a municipality, other local government entity or a related non-profit. Program, grant, or project management experience is highly desirable.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

The ability to convey oneself to and from geographical locations frequently and timely, or possession of a valid CA driver’s license.

SELECTION PROCESS:

BENEFITS OVERVIEW:

Retirement: The City is a part of the CalPERS retirement plan and does not contribute to Social Security.

Classic employees – 2% @55 formula, highest 3-year average compensation.

PEPRA employees – hired after 1/1/13 or Classic employee with 6-month break in service are eligible for a 2% @ 62 formula, highest 3-year average compensation.

Deferred Compensation: The City offers an optional 457 plan. Employees who actively participate receive a contribution by the City of 1% of their base pay on a bi-weekly basis.

Cafeteria Benefit Plan: The City offers a healthy cafeteria benefit program including choices among plan options for: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, dependent care, flexible spending account, short and long-term disability, and PERS long-term care insurance.

Auto Allowance: $250 a month or assigned use of a City vehicle.

Employee Development: $2,000 annual reimbursement for educational programs.

Commuter Check Program: City pays 50% of the cost for vouchers used for commuting, up to $50 per month.

Holidays: 10 authorized holidays per year, plus 16 hours of floating holiday time.

Administrative Leave: 80 hours of leave per calendar year.

Vacation: Employees earn 136 hours of vacation and 96 hours of sick leave per year.
