Job description
Overview:
Galileo is looking for Program Directors to lead Camp Galileo sites for the 2023 season. Summer Program Directors (aka “Camp Directors”) are outstanding leaders who assume overall leadership of one summer day camp location, including staff management for a team 10-50+ employees, day-to-day operations, and creating a joy-filled summer camp culture.

Galileo Learning brings best-in-class educational programs to tens of thousands of kids each year through in-person summer day camps across the country and after-school programs for low-income students in the San Francisco Bay Area. We believe the world needs innovators and that innovation can be taught.

We value divergent thinkers who bring various experiences and viewpoints to the table at Galileo. Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the requirements, women and other underrepresented people tend to only apply when they match all criteria. Even if you don't necessarily meet every checkbox in the job description, but you think you have what it takes, we encourage you to still apply.
Position Description:

Essential Responsibilities

  • Pre-camp: 8-12 hours per week of paid professional development and management training
  • During camp: 45-60 hours per week to plan and oversee the smooth day-to-day operations of a camp site.
  • Staff management and training: Provide regular feedback, foster team building, and support a staff of 10-30 employees.
  • Camper & family relations: Plan and lead campers in all-camp activities, communicate with camper families, and serve as the main point of contact for your campsite.

What are we looking for?

  • College graduate or equivalent work experience
  • Genuine love for and interest in working with children and/or education
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (management experience a plus) and ability to work collaboratively
  • Openness to feedback and a desire to grow professionally
  • Ability to work part-time in winter and spring (8-12 hours per week), and full-time in summer
  • Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy, and exceptional enthusiasm each day
  • Flexibility to meet changing needs and demands while balancing multiple tasks efficiently
  • CPR/First Aid Certified OR willing to become certified by the start of camp

Benefits & Compensation

    • Compensation
  • Pre-camp (starting early 2023): 8-12 hours per week at $20+/hour
    • During camp: $1200+/week of camp (6-8 weeks, depending on location)
    • Performance and enrollment bonuses: vary depending on camp size
  • Leadership training & professional development. You’ll receive unique and exceptional training including weekend management training retreats, and weekly individual coaching throughout the camp season.
  • Upward Mobility. As Galileo grows, we’re often looking for Regional Directors, curriculum creators, and other full-time staff.
  • Free camp. You will have free camp sessions for every camp week you work or you can gift two weeks of free camp to others.
  • Early application bonus. If you apply by one of the dates listed below and are hired, you will receive the corresponding early application bonus with your first paycheck.
    • App submitted by 9/25/22: $1,000
    • App submitted by 10/30/22: $500
    • App submitted by 12/4/22: $250

Work Location
We are only able to employ candidates who are based in the following states: California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, or Washington.

Pre-camp:
With the exception of weekend retreats and occasional events, pre-camp season work is done remotely.

During camp:
You’ll be placed at one of our 50+in-person sites throughout the SF Bay Area, Southern California, Chicago, or Seattle.

COVID-19

All on-site employees will be required to demonstrate that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Whether you require a reasonable accommodation or exemption will not impact the consideration of your candidacy. As COVID-19 guidelines evolve, some dates may be shifted and in-person work duties may be performed virtually.
