Responsibilities:

In this role you will use your expertise in Packaging Science or Engineering to lead package development and perform the critical experimental work of applied science thru research and/or development, including planning and execution of experiments, generating, and analyzing data. Your work is typically “hands on”, in a lab, in a manufacturing plant or pilot plant, at a critical site, on a computer or with cross-functional team members, and consumers.

Your primary responsibilities will include:
  • Lead package development for new Pet products, work with suppliers to provide technically feasible packaging solutions from design concepts to deliver innovative new packaging and products.
  • Interact with cross functional technical and business project team members to deliver technically ready packaging for new products.
  • Identify, design, develop and implement sustainable packaging solutions with compatible packaging technologies; including flexible films, blow molded containers, cans, paperboard, and corrugated materials.
  • Lead the Technical Readiness process and/or collaborate with technical readiness leaders on projects providing required package development to meet product protection, distribution, and consumer use requirements.
  • Define and conduct package development testing to ensure readiness for production, distribution, customer and consumer fit for use performance.
  • Design and execute package commissioning and qualifications for new packaging with suppliers and/or on packing lines in pet food production plants.
  • Plan, Execute, Analyze and summarize plant trials working closely with manufacturing, engineering, and production site technical resources.
  • Evaluate emerging packaging trends and technologies for fit with corporate strategy, including environmentally friendly/sustainable packaging formats and develop relationships with equipment suppliers and solution providers.
  • Contribute innovative ideas leading to the development and application of new packaging technologies and solving packaging related challenges.
  • Maintain and develop performance-based Pet packaging specifications.
  • Use project management skills and tools to control schedule, budget and scope of assignments and initiatives.
Qualifications:
Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Packaging or Engineering field (with packaging experience required). Advanced degree in technical or business program is desired, but not required.
Experience
  • At least 5 to 8 years of relevant package development experience required (depending on advanced degree)
  • Experienced in package development process and testing from concept to implementation
  • Prior experience in the CPG industry required
  • Prior food industry experience preferred, Pet food industry a plus
  • Experienced in Flexible Packaging technologies (Large Format Paper bags and/or Poly woven bags, flexible packaging (Roll stock, Pre-made pouches) and cans a plus
What we are looking for:
  • Familiarity with multiple packaging materials, technologies, and processes is desirable.
  • Familiarity with development of Primary and Secondary packaging solutions and associated technologies and processes is desirable.
  • Familiarity with OMNI channel, Mass retail and E-Comm distribution desirable as a plus.
  • Proven technical proficiency in package development, preferably with multi-wallpaper/plastics in food packaging highly desired. Mastery of package qualification test procedures in laboratory and operations environments.
  • Familiarity with ASTM and ISTA standards used to assess packaged products during the distribution cycle is desirable.
  • Ability to collaborate and work across multi-functional and discipline boundaries in a dynamic agile project environment.
  • Project management experience is highly valued for this role, as the individual will collaborate cross functionally to manage technical development, schedules, and resources for the work.
  • Ability to write and secure approval to test plans required for initiatives and other improvements; executes plans; reports on results
  • Position will require travel, up to 25%, to Pet production facilities, suppliers, and other copackers.
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking and creativity skills
  • Effective presentation, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift 30lbs.
  • Ability to work both in the office and remotely. While the job location is Lakeville MN, some members of the team will be in Orrville, OH, and the role does offer a hybrid work schedule.
