WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Southwest New Mexico Field Representative (Field Representative) develops, manages, and advances conservation programs, plans and methods for The Nature Conservancy in New Mexico. The Field Representative provides technical leadership and support to the New Mexico Operating Unit and plans and directs preserve management programs, ecological restoration projects and stewardship with a focus on the Gila and Mimbres Rivers and watersheds. The Field Representative engages local community and governments in planning and implementing local conservation projects; and applies complex and innovative solutions with local, state, and federal government agencies, Tribes, agricultural communities, and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities and increase water security. The Field Representative will be responsible for implementing and managing field stewardship (e.g., invasive species control, infrastructure maintenance, preserve and easement monitoring, ecological monitoring, tree planting and ecological restoration) for the New Mexico Chapter’s network of preserves and land assets in Southern New Mexico. The position is responsible for managing information relating to protected properties, including all preserve and easement monitoring reports. The position develops and implements conservation strategies and employs a full range of protection tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in land and implements a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities. The Field Representative coordinates community support and outreach, leads field trips, ensures the maintenance of preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and coordinates multiple projects, sets deadlines, and manages completion.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Serves as a team leader for New Mexico freshwater projects and participates as a conservation team member.
  • Engages in cross-boundary work and relationships with the Colorado River Program and Conservancy business units (AZ, TX, Mexico) that share river basins with New Mexico.
  • Works with coalitions of stakeholders including agencies, landowners, businesses, Tribes, traditional communities, and other conservation organizations to accomplish program goals.
  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
  • Supervises technical, administrative, and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers.
  • Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Experience in training.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
