PART TIME - Solid Waste Truck Driver

Nature of Work

This is responsible solid waste and sanitation work involving hauling household trash and debris and recyclable materials for Cumberland County. Activities associated with the job include collecting trash from convenience centers, schools and public facilities and transporting loads to the landfill according to assigned routes and/or operating a one-ton truck to haul recyclable materials from the recycling center to the appropriate place for disposal. Incumbents must be capable of safely operating a large sanitation truck and/or a one-ton truck utilized by the sanitation department. Incumbents may also be required to perform a variety of activities associated with maintaining the county owned convenience centers including cleaning around the dumpsters, performing maintenance duties, repairing fences and mowing when necessary.

Job related duties require a good driving record, good organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills and sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Some activities require heavy manual labor depending upon workload demands. Job performance is evaluated daily by the Assistant Solid Waste

Director and/or Solid Waste Director through review of the safe operation of vehicles and equipment, ability to interact effectively with the public, organizational and decision making skills and willingness to complete all job assignments.

Illustrative Examples of Work

-Completes safety inspections of assigned trucks and equipment prior to operation.

-Drives a sanitation truck along assigned route and picks up trash and other debris from convenience centers, public facilities and schools for delivery to the landfill.

-Mows and cleans the grounds of convenience centers when necessary.

-Assists attendants and drivers with loading, unloading, compressing, lifting and emptying all collection containers.

-Assists with the repair and maintenance of convenience center locations including repairing fences and performing light maintenance activities on the buildings when necessary.

-Operates a one ton truck to collect recyclable material including discarded computer equipment, batteries, demolition materials, glass, oil, etc. and delivers them to the appropriate location.

-Fills in for Convenience Center Attendants when necessary.

-Assists with the cleaning and routine maintenance of front end loaders and one ton trucks used in solid waste operations.

-Provides information to the public regarding solid waste regulations, disposal of various materials, etc.

-Spreads rock and grades the lots in the convenience centers when necessary.

-Attends safety meetings and training session to maintain required certifications.

-Communicates on a regular basis using radio and written communications to effectively coordinate scheduled and non-scheduled routes.

-Makes minor repairs and adjustments to maintain the proper operation of solid waste machinery

and equipment.

-Performs minor preventive maintenance activities on solid waste machinery and equipment and notifies supervisors and mechanics of equipment malfunctions.

-Directs traffic around solid waste collection operations when necessary to ensure the safety of the public.

-Performs related duties as required.

Necessary Requirements of Work

Graduation from an accredited high school preferred; considerable experience working in solid waste operations and operating heavy equipment; ability to interact tactfully with the public; ability to make timely and appropriate decisions within established operating procedures; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to perform the following critical knowledge, abilities, and skills:

-Thorough knowledge of solid waste operations and maintenance including the use of large sanitation trucks and one ton trucks.

-Thorough knowledge of assigned routes for the collection of trash and debris from convenience centers, schools, public facilities, etc.

-Thorough knowledge of traffic regulations pertaining to right of way and related safety procedures.

-Thorough knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and minor repair of heavy equipment utilized for solid waste operations.

-Considerable knowledge of the proper handling and disposal of recyclable materials.

-Considerable knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely around heavy equipment utilized in solid waste operations.

-Ability to operate specialized and non-specialized solid waste equipment and machinery in a safe manner.

-Ability to use power tools and hand tools in a proper and safe manner.

-Ability to make proper job related decisions after receiving daily assignments.

-Ability to communicate and interact with the public in a polite and tactful manner.

-Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions.

-Skill in the operation of large sanitation trucks and heavy equipment utilized in solid waste operations.

Necessary Special Requirements

-Possession of a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver License, Class A and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.

➢ This is very heavy work requiring considerable static, explosive, dynamic and trunk strength and requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force constantly and up to 5 pounds of force frequently to move objects

➢ The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, loud noises, vibrations, blood borne pathogens, hazards and oils
