Job description

El Colibrí is hiring a site manager to provide day-to-day administration of our overnight shelter for women who are homeless in the Holyoke area. We will open our shelter in mid-January at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at 34 Jarvis Avenue in Holyoke. We will be open from mid-January to mid-April 2023. This is a temporary, full-time position.

We are a low-barrier shelter with a behavior-based admission policy; those who struggle with substance use are welcome in our shelter as long as they respect the safety and well-being of other guests and staff.

El Colibrí will provide a warm and safe place for guests to sleep, as well as a hot meal at night and breakfast in the morning. Limited case management may also be available to help guests apply for IDs, food stamps, and other services, as well as referrals to other agencies.

Site manager responsibilities:

  • As needed, assist in the hiring and training of shelter staff, and provide on-going supervision for current shelter staff.
  • Supervise the nightly setup of the shelter, and ensure that overnight staff complete all necessary morning tasks for the breakdown of the shelter.
  • Oversee the physical premises of the shelter and ensure that all areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and secure manner. Report any maintenance problems to the Executive Director and church staff.
  • Oversee the initial intake of guests and maintain all documentation pertaining to guests.
  • Monitor the daily log of activities within the shelter.
  • Ensure that all staff comply with all shelter policies and procedures, and assist shelter staff in the de-escalation and resolution of problematic situations that may arise.
  • Review and submit biweekly staff time sheets to the Administrator, correcting any problematic entries prior to submission.
  • Coordinate visits by outside agencies and providers, and maintain documentation of these visits.

Candidate qualifications

  • Strong organizational and computer skills.
  • Professionalism, empathy, and good judgment.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, especially those who are homeless.
  • Ability to use discretion in the handling of confidential information, and to problem-solve in difficult situations.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff members to maintain a calm and peaceful shelter, and to ensure the safety and well-being of both guests and staff.
  • Experience with de-escalation techniques and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to remain calm when dealing with health and safety emergencies.

The successful candidate will understand the importance of maintaining shelter rules and expectations, and will be able to convey these calmly and clearly to both staff and guests.

Candidates must have reliable transportation.

A knowledge of local social services and community resources, as well as a strong commitment to help those who are homeless are pluses. Bilingual and bicultural candidates and residents of Holyoke are strongly encouraged to apply.

Staff are required to be trained/certified in CPR/use of an AED, first aid, blood-borne pathogens, and use of Narcan. Trainings will be provided by El Colibrí if staff member is not already certified.

A background check (CORI) will be performed on those who are offered a position.

Required experience

Candidates should have a minimum of two years’ experience working with human services nonprofit organizations, should have served in a managerial role, and should have experience working with vulnerable populations such as homeless individuals, immigrants and refugees, those suffering from substance use disorders, or low-income populations. Other relevant experience may be considered. Candidates should be committed to and capable of creative and effective problem-solving, and should understand the importance of confidentiality, of professional ethics, and of appropriate boundaries.

Candidates should be very aware that this is a population that deals with multiple and often severe life stressors, and therefore it is imperative that staff have the compassion, patience, and skills to help guests learn how to deal productively with the stressors they are experiencing. We need to meet our guests where they are and as they are, so that we can work together to find the best way to help them work toward a more stable life in the community.
