Our Supply, Trading and Optimization group is Suncor’s face to energy commodity markets and is expanding the current crude, refined products, and LPG trading platform with a focus on enhancing the optimization and trading activities supporting a significant and growing international footprint. Our Houston trading office initially opened in 2014 and has since tripled in size to 35 employees in 2022 with expectations of continued growth. Currently, Suncor has Supply, Trading and Optimization offices in Calgary, London, and Houston.
The Senior Risk Advisor role plays a critical part in ensuring our commodities supply and trading activity is conducted with transparency and falls in line with our risk management framework and associated policies.

Minimum Requirements:
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant Market Risk, Middle Office, or Product Control experience in energy trading environments
  • University Degree, preferably Business, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics or Computer Science
  • Superior understanding of commodity risk management, including derivatives, physical crude markets, trading cycle, risk metrics (VAR, Stop Loss, Stress Testing, Position Limits, etc.)
  • Advanced Excel skills, experience with Energy Trading Risk Management systems (e.g. Triple Point CXL, Allegro, Open Link).
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI or Python.

Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and publish the daily risk management exposure reports, profit and loss (P&L) reports, and other related reporting requirements for our North American and International crude, products and LPG trading activity
  • Administer risk governance policies and standards as part of the control program supporting the supply and trading business
  • Operate as the main day-to-day risk function contact for our trading team in the United States, with strong connectivity to our teams in Calgary and London
  • Collaborate with commercial and other functions to support the significant growth of new business initiatives
  • Drive continuous improvement opportunities in processes and systems
  • Balance independent reporting and control duties with a business partnering and enabling approach
  • Ensure trading activity complies with internal and external policies and limits
  • Identify complex transactions and primary result drivers, as well as their financial implications.
Location and other Key Details:
  • You will work out of our Houston office, located at 2 Allen Centre, 1200 Smith St.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
  • We have implemented a Hybrid Work Model to provide our employees with a combination of office-based work and ‘work from home’ flexibility
