The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our South Puget Sound Region. South Puget Sound Region, Wildfire District is actively seeking to fill a Wildland Fire Operations Technician 2 position in the Spillman Fire Unit. This position will be filled on a permanent basis. The selected applicant will be stationed in the Spillman Fire Unit at the DNR’s Ramirez Building located in Belfair at the Mission Creek Correctional Facility. The Spillman Fire Unit encompasses Mason and Kitsap Counties. This unit protects a diverse population in rural and industrial lands, as well as growing urban-interface communities throughout the counties. Fire starts can be high considering our moderate climate. Fire environments in the unit are very dynamic. On any given day, you could be secluded in one of our area’s working forests many miles from pavement or operating close within the Wildland Urban Interface. In this dynamic environment positive interagency relationships.

Duties

Responsibilities:
This position will provide field support of fire suppression, fire investigation, fire prevention and fire regulation activities within the Spillman Unit and SPS Region. The position will be a part of a dynamic team environment: filling critical fire leadership roles; developing and monitoring projects supporting the agency and wildfire missions; interacting as an agency representative with timber industry personnel, fire district partners, and the public; and providing supervision of seasonal staff in the absence of your immediate supervisor. Under the guidance of the Assistant Unit Manager, you will be engaged in all day-today operations in the Spillman Unit.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age and high school diploma or G.E.D. at time of hire.
  • Single Resource Boss NWCG qualifications of one of the following; Engine Boss, Crew Boss, Felling Boss, Heavy Equipment Boss, Helicopter Manager or the ability to obtain one the qualifications listed above within one calendar year of employment and NWCG qualified as an Incident Commander Type 5.
  • Knowledge of and experience with firefighting techniques, practices, terminology, equipment and other resources for wildland fire management including support needs, communications, safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire regulatory practices, burn permit process, and experience conducting Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination investigations.
  • Experience in supervising wildland firefighting personnel.
  • Experience with the use of MS Office software.
  • Demonstrated experience professionally communicating with a variety of groups to include subordinates, superiors, the public, and other partner organizations both written, verbal, and face to face, especially in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining cooperative, effective working relationships both internally and externally.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment :
  • Requires large majority (70%) of work is performed alone in isolated, unimproved natural areas. Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Requires large majority (80%) of time in the field traveling alone between fires, work centers, and burn permit locations. This includes may include driving in icy and snow covered roads, during low visibility conditions and stormy weather.
  • Must annually pass the work capacity test at the arduous level as required by NWCG.
  • Ability to obtain an NWCG qualification of Wildland Fire Investigator within 24 months of appointment to the position.
  • Ability to obtain an NWCG qualification of Single Resource Boss (Engine and/or Heavy Equipment) and Incident Commander Type 4 within 1 year of appointment to the position.
  • Activity working towards the NWCG qualification of Task Force Leader and Strike Team Leader.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • A Bachelors or Associates Degree from an accredited institution in a Fire Science, Forestry, Natural Resource, or related field or two years of wildland fire fighting experience with one year experience supervising wildland firefighters.
  • Meeting NWCG qualifications as a Task Force Leader, Strike Team Leader and ICT 4.
  • Completed FEMA ICS courses I-100, I-200, IS-700, IS-800.
  • Skilled in supervision, leadership and management of people.
