Position Information

Performs highly skilled work in the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), including SCBA cylinders, and related personal protective equipment employed during the course of fighting fires; conducts the fit testing and flow analysis of SCBA equipment utilizing advanced diagnostic equipment; instructs training bureau and field personnel in the conduct of SCBA training classes; and performs other related duties as required.

Current Vacancy: There is 1 vacancy with the Honolulu Fire Department, Administrative Services Bureau, Occupational Safety and Health Office. Position is based at the Waipahu Maintenance Facility. This position works under the Supervising Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Technician, and participates in the inspection, repair and maintenance of SCBA components, including but not limited to, inspection and filling of SCBA cylinders and conducting fit testing and flow testing. The position also assists in the recordkeeping functions of the SCBA and related programs, including inventory control and exchange protocol of SCBA units and components.

Special Working Conditions: May be subject to work nights, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Two years of experience that involved the following:

(a) maintenance, testing, and repair of valves, regulators, respiratory protection equipment, or breathing air compressors; and/or

(b) warehousing and inventory control of respiratory protection equipment, including breathing apparatus and oxygen cylinders, which involved the inspection and proper handling and storage of such items.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of the methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in the testing, maintenance, and repair of SCBA and related equipment; warehousing and inventory control practices; and handling and storage requirements of specialized supplies, equipment, and material.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1. Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.

2. Possession of applicable manufacturer's certification(s) related to the proper use, maintenance, repair, and testing of SCBA and related equipment, prior to completion of probation.
