Job Summary
This is a one year limited term position and is funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.

The Auburn University College of Agriculture seeks a Research Assistant who will be responsible for maintaining long-term agricultural experiments and agronomic teaching gardens on Auburn University’s campus. The individual will also be expected to assist in managing Official Variety trials for cotton, corn, grain sorghum, peanut, ryegrass, small grains, small grain forages, and soybean. This position is located at Auburn University in Auburn, AL.

Essential Functions
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Planning, overseeing, and maintaining: 1) historic agricultural experiments on Auburn University’s campus (i.e. The Old Rotation and Cullars Rotation) and 2) teaching gardens on Auburn University’s campus (i.e., agronomic crops teaching garden, perennial forage teaching garden, bioenergy crop teaching garden).
  • Assisting in managing and maintain Official Variety trials for cotton, corn, grain sorghum, peanut, ryegrass, small grains, small grain forages, and soybean throughout the state of Alabama.
  • Scheduling, monitoring, and maintaining records of research.
  • Procuring equipment and supplies to sustain research projects.
  • Assisting with machinery operation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ensuring compliance with pesticide application, procedure, and standards, as well as other regulations specific to execution of job responsibilities.
  • Interacting with a variety of individuals and groups for tours and presentations on historic agricultural experiments.
  • Collecting data from research trials.
  • Supervising undergraduate student workers in the field.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Level I A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Soil Science, Crop science, or a closely-related field is required to be considered for this position; Knowledge/experience with row crop research.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities
The individual selected for this position should have experience working with plot-scale research trials and should demonstrate the ability to collect and organize data.

  • Must be able to lift at least fifty pounds, operate farm equipment, and walk up to three miles a day, as field work is a large component of this position. Frequent travel throughout the state of Alabama will be required, and the individual must be able to haul large machinery.

Minimum Technology Skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office

Minimum License and Certifications
A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection.
