Position Summary

The Registered Nurse will be clinically competent while delivering care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation. RN’s will effectively interact with patients, significant others and other health team members while maintaining all standards of professional nursing.

The role of the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurse is to provide care for post-operative patients recovering from anesthesia, including general, monitored anesthesia care (MAC), regional, and local. The PACU RN treats outpatients according to their needs, monitoring their vital signs to determine necessary care.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Uses the nursing process by demonstrating appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient’s care, as evidenced by client/staff observation.

• Assesses the patient to ensure accuracy of identification band and provides accurate ongoing assessment of patient’s status and responds appropriately.

• Provides diligent care via monitoring, assessment, intervention, and continuous assessment.

• Provides adequate assessment and reassessment of pain utilizing appropriate pain management techniques.

• Administers medications and initiates IV’s accordingly.

• Observes and documents a patient's response to pertinent medications.

• Demonstrates necessary skills, treatment, and knowledge to provide care for patients according to policy and procedure.

• Demonstrates ability to handle emergency situations in a prompt, precise and professional manner.

• Notifies anesthesia of any abnormal findings.

• Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs and side effects.

• Gives a thorough, concise report to RN and communicates pertinent information; provides safe transportation from PACU to the nursing unit.

• Accurately transcribe physician orders.

• Maintains a clean, neat and safe environment for patients and staff.

• Ensures that supplies and equipment necessary for patient care are stored in an organized and efficient manner.

• Demonstrates correct and safe techniques for the use of equipment according to specific product information.

• Follows appropriate procedures for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.

• Complies with policy and procedure concerning safety.

• Demonstrate knowledge of changing bandages and/or reinforcing surgical dressings.

• Complete other duties as assigned

Required Skills And Abilities

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

• 1-year previous experience in a PACU setting.

Education And Experience

• Current BLS certification.

• Current ACLS certification.

• Current PALS certification.

• Current Louisiana Registered Nurse Licensure.
