PURPOSE OF JOB:
To provide professional nursing care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, to collaborate with the physician's medical plan, and to execute the objectives and follow the policies of the hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assesses, plans, implements, documents, coordinates, and manages patient care according to department and hospital standards and giving consideration to
age-specific accommodations.

Communicates and collaborates with patients, physicians, family members and
other health care disciplines in order to achieve excellence in patient care during hospitalization.

Promotes patient safety through adherence to protocols, policies, procedures, evidence-based guidelines and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.

Actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational quality initiatives and goals.

Maintains clinical competency according to unit-specific standards.
III. JOB CRITERIA AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS (GI Specific):

Assesses, plans, implements, documents, coordinates, and manages patient care according to department and hospital standards and giving consideration to age-specific accommodations.

Utilizes the nursing process for all patients assigned to his/her care:

Completes admission assessment according to unit standards

Implements nursing/physician orders that result in achievement of
organizational, nursing and physician goals.

Utilizes analytical skills to provide efficient patient care and be able to handle
critical situations in a timely and safe manner.

Completes admission assessment according to unit standards.

Maintains evolving plan of care based on nursing assessment, the medical plan of care and patient need. The plan is initiated according to department standards.

Provides patient care, which demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of
normal physiology and disease pathophysiology, appropriate nursing and
medical interventions and a knowledge of the principles of growth and
development over the lifespan.

Implements patient plan of care based on evidence based practice.
-
Documents patient response to treatment and effectiveness of care.
-
Provides teaching and discharge planning based on assessment of self-care knowledge/ability on an ongoing basis.
-
Insures appropriate completion of chart and other documentation including transcription of physician orders, computer entry and medication reconciliation.
-
Insures that no unapproved abbreviations are used when documenting on patient's medical record.
-
Demonstrates appropriate skill in utilization of the computer for automated order entry, data retrieval, medication administration, nursing care planning and intervention and interdepartmental communication as determined by defined access levels.

Implements nursing/physician orders that result in achievement of patient, nursing, and physician goals. Evaluates, revises, and improves patient care using creative strategies, current research findings, and consideration of age-specific accommodations.

Appropriately assigns all Associates under his/her supervision according to their skill level.

Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in completion of assigned responsibilities in accordance with department needs.

Performs selected therapeutic interventions and diagnostic procedures according to department standards as ordered to include but not limited to:
-
medication administration according to hospital policy

point of care testing
-
Cardiac monitoring
-
initiation and maintenance of oxygen therapy
-
specimen collection utilizing mobile lab when appropriate
-
phlebotomy (venipuncture)
-
Adheres to Moderate Sedation Guidelines pre, intra and post procedurally.
-
Thoroughly completes the GI Monitoring Record for all sedation cases.
-
GI Chart checks to be done daily, the day prior to the scheduled procedure.
-
2 patient identifiers will be utilized before performing these interventions and/or procedures

Assists patients physically by providing physical support through pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, turning, kneeling, standing, sitting and balancing, and psychologically by providing emotional intervention.
-
Demonstrates ability to perform with clinical proficiency in crises and medical emergencies.
-
Demonstrates ability to be technically competent in all psychomotor interventions when administering physical and psychosocial care to patients.
-
Implements decontamination, cleaning and reprocessing of endoscopic equipment and accessories according to policy and procedure. Utilized appropriate methods (guided by standards) and techniques to achieve results in an effective and efficient manner.

Prepares and assembles all endoscopic instruments according to manufacturer's recommendations. Effectively plans, organizes and completes preparation in the shortest, most efficient manner. Tests proper functioning of instruments.

Prioritizes activities based on knowledge and comprehension of the endoscopy schedule.

Demonstrates knowledge and technical skills in use and care of endoscopic equipment and accessories.

Utilizes managerial skills to effectively direct other nursing personnel and coordinate patient care as required by the Nurse Practice Act and unit and hospital standards.

Communicates and collaborates with patients, physicians, family members, and other health care disciplines in order to achieve excellence in patient care during hospitalization.

Utilizes effective interpersonal skills including interaction with staff through understanding, talking, hearing, seeing and listening.

Involves patient/significant other in all aspects of the plan of care, serving as advocate when necessary.

Follows staffing guidelines. In the interest of patient care, responds to changes or needs within the Patient Services Team by cooperating with staff rotation, reassignment to other departments and weekend/holiday scheduling.

Promotes patient safety through adherence to protocols, policies, procedures, evidence-based guidelines and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.

Maintains safety precautions while providing patient care including infection control isolation, patient/bed positioning, side rails, restraint utilization, skin care, patient/specimen transport, physical environment, fall prevention, seizure precautions, and work injury prevention.

Analyzes data and responds to unusual/undesirable clinical status by consulting appropriate healthcare team members, including Rapid Response Team, and taking appropriate action in a timely manner.

Maintains equipment in good working order, reports equipment failure, and initiates corrective action. Where appropriate, adheres to defined computer generated quality monitoring or procedures for validation of equipment functionality.

Safely administers medications and treatments as ordered according to hospital policy and formulary using the appropriate principles of safe medication administration, 2 patient identifiers.

Safely handles various types of drugs and body fluids using knowledge of appropriate standard precautions.

Identifies patient using patient name and date of birth.

Participates in the surgical "time out" prior to procedure.

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.

BSN strongly preferred.

Current licensure in Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of State Bureau of Occupational and Professional Affairs and successful completion of appropriate continuing education specific to job requirements
