What will you do?
The Psychiatrist or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) dually functions as a consulting provider in an integrated behavioral health model and as a prescribing specialist for more complex patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Diagnoses disorders, including nature and extent, and determines the appropriate course of treatment.
- Prescribes and directs psychotherapeutic treatments or medications in the treatment of complex patients.
- Collaborates with primary care providers, psychologists, social workers, or other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress.
- Provides face-to-face consultation services to patients for the purpose of providing direction to the primary care team in the integrated model.
- Provides consultation to PCHC primary care physicians (PCPs) as requested.
- Provides written recommendation to the primary care team based on chart review and/or face-to-face contact with patients.
- Provides regularly scheduled caseload consultation to assigned Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs). These consultations will primarily focus on patients who are new to treatment or who are not improving as expected.
- Discusses patients who need referral for additional specialty mental health care (e.g., to an in-patient facility) and advise on treatment plans until patients are engaged in appropriate care.
- Uses the EMR to document recommendations for treatment and/or referrals so that they can be easily shared with PCPs and other treating providers.
- Provides prompt in-basket responses/consultation as needed to written requests by PCPs and BHCs within two business days or less. Responds to telephone calls from PCPs and BHCs within one business day. Responds to urgent telephone calls within one hour whenever possible.
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
- Excellent working knowledge of behavioral medicine and evidence-based treatments for mental health conditions.
- Awareness and interest in participating in an integrated behavioral health model.
- Ability to make quick and accurate clinical assessments of mental and behavioral conditions.
- High level of comfort in working with primary care medical providers using a consultative style.
- Ability to work through brief patient contacts, including telephone.
- Good knowledge of psychopharmacology.
- Ability to contribute to the design and implementation of clinical pathways and protocols for treatment of select mental and behavioral conditions. Ability to train and teach effective behavioral health interventions to medical practitioners and other behavioral health providers.
- Ability to work effectively as a team, interfacing with patients, primary care providers, consulting psychiatrists and mental health specialists, as well as with administrative and support staff.
- Ability to exercise balanced judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions, and to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent, and equitable manner.
- Ability to effectively represent PCHC's interests in the community and maintain effective working relationships among co-workers, public, private, and professional groups.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree (MD or DO) or master's degree from an accredited university
- Board certified or board eligible in psychiatry specialty
- Current Wisconsin licensure and DEA license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with primary care psychiatry and awareness/experience in integrated behavioral health models.
- Prior work experience in a Federally Qualified Health Center with a diverse patient population
