The National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored Next-Generation Clinical Research Center on Laryngeal Dystonia and Voice Tremor at Massachusetts Eye and Ear is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, experienced scientist to act as the Program Manager to develop, implement and lead the scientific, financial, and operational research program under the direction of the Center’s Director.

The Center integrates comprehensive, cross-disciplinary clinical and research approaches for characterization of symptomatology and pathophysiology of neurological voice disorders (laryngeal dystonia and voice tremor), with the goal to develop new approaches to improved diagnosis and treatment of these patients. The Center’s translational research program includes sites at Mass Eye and Ear, Mass General Hospital, University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and University of Utah.

The Program Manager will function independently, strategizing with the Center Director and Site Principal Investigators (PIs) to develop and supervise various stages of the Center’s research projects. The Program Manager will lead initiatives across multidisciplinary teams and internal and external organizations (including MGH, UCSF, and University of Utah) and serve at the interface of internal and external team communications, mapping scientific progress, and helping develop strategies for the program growth.


Duties Include

The principal duties and responsibilities of the Program Manager will include, but may not be limited to, the following.

Strategic Planning and Development

  • Work with the Center Director to develop detailed project timelines for management and growth.
  • Be responsible for alliance and collaboration management across all Center sites.
  • Map scientific progress to develop strategies for program growth.
  • Work with the Center Director to effectively communicate discoveries across the Center sites, internal and external scientific communities, and patient organizations.
  • Assist with or lead preparation of NIH annual progress reports.
  • Prepare written and/or verbal monthly internal status reports.
  • Coordinate the Center website content development with stakeholders and study leaders.
  • Work with the Mass Eye and Ear Public Relations office on updates of the Center’s activities.
  • Be responsible for the organization of Center meetings, including the annual External Advisory Committee meetings.

Financial Management

  • Provide budgetary oversight for all projects across all Center sites.
  • Maintain Center budgets in collaboration with Grant Administrators and Site PIs.
  • Oversee subcontracts, invoicing, and all financial operations of Center sites.
  • Generate cost projections and timelines for projects.
  • Prepare written and/or verbal financial reports.
  • Work with PIs, Grant Administrators, research management and research finance to ensure proper fund management and timely reporting.

Development and Execution of Research Projects

  • Be responsible for high level oversight of the development, implementation, and analysis of Center research projects across all sites.
  • Participate in research meetings, conference calls, and other forums related to the development and implementation of projects.
  • Support the execution of projects as required for the achievement of project goals.
  • Participate in preparation and maintenance of operations manuals for data systems as a reference for all users.
  • Be responsible for developing a training program for research staff across Center sites.
  • Work with PIs and other stakeholders to develop and implement data management tools.

Data Management

  • Create and manage databases and communicate effectively with all Center sites for high-level data oversight.
  • Integrate new studies into current data operations and management systems.
  • Be responsible for the development and maintenance of data flow pipelines between Center sites.
  • Participate in the development of and maintain automation methods and technologies for data management, transfer ,and archiving.
  • Perform internal data audits, including quality control and assurance of all research data.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Center Director, Site PIs, auditors, and NIH Program Director.
  • Oversee the maintenance of regulatory documentation across the Center sites.
  • Be responsible for Clinicaltrials.gov reporting.
  • Manage Single IRB documentation, annual IRB reports, and protocol amendments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required with preference for Master’s degree in life sciences, ideally with experience or overlap in neuroscience or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 – 7 years research experience.
  • Previous experience in grant or scientific writing.
  • High-level competency with data management.
  • Strong computer and programming skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of NIH contract procedures and funding policies.
  • Ability to make independent, effective decisions with initiative to introduce innovations.
  • Excellent judgement and ability to interpret information and protocol requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interaction at all levels of many different organizations and forums.
  • Strong writing skills across a range of areas –e.g., research protocols, reports for professional and lay audiences.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to problem solve effectively.
  • High level time management and organization skills, including skills to formulate and complete vigorous timetables.
  • Ability to function with speed, precision, and understanding of theory behind protocols and experiments.
  • Ability to design, prepare, deliver, and evaluate research programs.
  • Administrative skills to meet regulatory and institutional requirements.
  • Ability to prepare and monitor budgets.
  • Knowledge of current and developing research trends.
  • Experience in scientific communication (social media, website, press).
