About the Office of Public Defense Services
The Maricopa County Office of the Public Defense Services assigns and oversees private attorneys contracted to represent indigent individuals in criminal, delinquency, dependency, mental health, and probate matters. We provide administrative support, financial oversight, integrated technology solutions, and HR support to all five of Maricopa County's Indigent Representation offices (Public Defender, Legal Defender, Legal Advocate, Public Advocate, and Contract Counsel) in an effort to ensure indigent individuals have their fundamental legal rights protected and receive quality legal representation.

We Require
  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience within a criminal justice, court, or legal environment
  • Post-secondary education may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license upon hire
We Also Value
  • Law enforcement experience
  • Valid process server certification issued by the Superior Court of Arizona
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills
Job Contributions
  • Serve subpoenas regarding criminal cases utilizing comprehensive knowledge of the process service principles, practices, and techniques
  • Prepare related legal documents, correspondence, and status reports
  • Contact clients and locate witnesses, prepare statistical end-of-month reports, and maintain and complete subpoena logs and certificates of service
  • Pick up and deliver records, witnesses, or other documents, and perform duties under critical deadlines
  • Conduct jail visits to perform initial defense advertisement to persons charged with first-degree murder
  • Enter Maricopa County jails, AZ Department of Correctional, and federal facilities
Working Conditions
  • Ability to travel to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles and/or private vehicles used on County business
  • Travel will be required countywide in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work indoors, outdoors, frequently in weather above 90 degrees; using stairs; in confined areas; and in bright lighting
  • Ability to constantly or frequently work with emergencies, in dangerous environments, and while subject to hostile conditions due to individuals trying to evade service
  • Unscheduled and frequently changing tasks as well as extensive public contact; work is performed both independently and as part of a team
  • Must obtain Process Server Certification with the Clerk of the Superior Court within six months of the date of hire
Selection Procedure
The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified. Those selected will be assessed based on the evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.
All offers of employment made to new hires and rehires at Maricopa County are contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer, pre-employment thorough background investigation. A background investigation is conducted on a current employee who changes to a Safety Sensitive Position or one having the potential for serious adverse impact on the integrity or efficiency of the County.
