About the Opportunity
Northeastern University is looking for a postdoctoral researcher for a project funded by the Department of Energy under their program from ARPA-E entitled “Harnessing Emissions into Structures Taking Inputs from the Atmosphere (HESTIA)”. The research project is entitled “4C2B: Century-scale Carbon-sequestration in Cross-laminated Timber (CLT) Composite Bolted-steel Buildings.” The project principal investigator is Dr. Jerome F. Hajjar, CDM Smith Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The project includes several other faculty at Northeastern University as well as investigators from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Swarthmore University, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, and OPAL Global LLC.
This project is advancing the state of the art in using cross-laminated timber floor diaphragms compositely with bolted steel frame structures, with a focus on advancing strategies for Design for Deconstruction (DfD). Design for Deconstruction enables structures to be taken apart at the end of their useful life so as to repurpose the structural components in future buildings rather than scrapping or recycling the materials. This project highlights potential cradle-to-cradle structural design strategies for net-zero or net-negative construction.
The project work includes 1) developing details of the sustainable structural system consisting of cross-laminated timber composite bolted-steel structures; 2) conducting large-scale tests of the CLT-steel DfD system in the Laboratory for Structural Testing of Resilient and Sustainable Systems (STReSS Laboratory) at Northeastern University; 2) conducting corroborating finite element analyses of the structural system and test specimens; 3) advancing new design equations that highlight the composite action and life-cycle benefits of the CLT-steel DfD system. This project may also explore the use of replaceable energy-dissipating ‘fuses’ to connect the CLT diaphragm to the steel framing to enhance the resilience of the system in low to moderate seismic zones.

The responsibilities of the post-doctoral associate are:
  • Perform research on experimental testing and analysis to develop and validate the structural response of Cross-laminated Timber Composite Bolted-steel Buildings in low to moderate seismic zones.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigators and students across multiple academic and industry organizations.
  • Lead the development of publications for leading peer reviewed journals and top conferences, and assist in presenting the research results at conferences and seminars.
  • Participate in project meetings and meetings with sponsors and other participants in the ARPA-E HESTIA program.
Qualifications:
  • Candidate must have experience in large-scale experimental testing and linear and nonlinear finite element analysis of structural systems.
  • Candidate must be able to work well on a team and with individuals from a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds in various types of contexts.
  • Candidate must be highly organized, have strong attention to detail, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be able to set and meet deadlines.
  • Candidate should be able to independently manage work flows related to aspects of this project, including advising students on this project.
  • Candidate should have completed or be near completion of PhD in civil/structural engineering or a related field.
