The Plant Manager will be working our largest bakery in North America in North Sioux City, SD. The plant is 350k sq. ft. and operates 8 highly automated production lines. At this plant, we produce cookies for multiple customers; including the Girl Scouts, Kroger, Walmart and many others. This facility has two unions, the BCTGM and Teamsters. Nestled between the curves of the Missouri River and the banks of McCook Lake, North Sioux City is at the intersection of commerce, recreation, and small town living with big city attractions.

Scope:
The Plant Manager is responsible for providing the overall leadership direction and accountability for a bakery that employs a team of 450+ hourly / salaried employees. They will translate business requirements to a Vision & Operating Strategy for the bakery and lead employees toward that vision. The Plant Manager will ensure the appropriate resources are engaged to meet all business needs, and ensure all legal and business requirements are met in delivering product to our customers.

Responsibilities:
Safety, Health and Environment
  • Set the tone for a culture of 0 tolerance with LOTO and other lifesaving procedures. Ensure compliance with all legal requirements. Drive accountability with company policies, procedures, and operational standards by setting clear expectations and communicating rationale for changes to teams;
  • Ensure required resources are provided to complete and document training;
Quality / Food Safety
  • Ensure all required resources are in place to ensure compliance with Food Safety audits and HACCP requirements;
  • Use tools & reports available to identify trends or issues & work to resolve, engaging corporate support as needed;
Production / Delivery
  • Work with corporate Supply Chain to identify principles for an optimized supply plan that delivers customer demand and minimizes inventory and operational costs. Ensure the required crewing strategy is in place and effective to deliver the production schedule;
  • Provide business & technical leadership necessary to ensure department & facility meet or exceed targets;
  • Lead team to deliver accurate production and inventory data and address issues as required;
Cost
  • Align on annual budget with Finance and senior leadership. Own and Deliver annual cost targets through careful tracking of costs, driving issue resolution / continuous improvement efforts, proper allocation of resources and effective project management;
  • Optimize bakery spend in alignment with Corporate preferred supplier programs;
Productivity
  • Instill a continuous improvement culture and mindset across the bakery. Use information tools to look for trends and drive bakery priorities;
  • Ensure the right site resources are engaged with Engineering for the planning, installation and testing of new equipment, methods and/or products;
  • Drive continuous reduction of overall plant downtime using available resources
People / Morale
  • Build and maintain a motivated and effective bakery team through effective engagement and sharing of information across bakery work teams and functional areas;
  • Ensure consistency across bakery in effective, timely and fair performance feedback and documentation;
  • Ensure effective union negotiations process where applicable;
  • Ensure the site is engaged with off-site business functional teams;
Other Duties
  • Ensure the right resources are engaged in recruitment process, and conduct effective onboarding of new employees;
  • Lead the development of crewing strategies to respond to changes in demand including significant increases and decreases in volume;
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 7 years experience managing in a food manufacturing plant - experience in the bakery industry a definite asset;
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety, HACCP and Food GMP regulations that is applicable for the State or Province (in a bakery environment preferred);
  • A good grasp of inventory management (cycle counting, materials management, etc.);
  • Integrity in abiding and upholding Company Code of Conduct, and ensuring all site processes align to legal & regulatory requirements and core values (Focus on People, Deliver for our Customers, Own Safety Together, Drive Performance)
  • Ability to anticipate what needs to be done & commits to take ownership to ensure it gets done;
  • Flexibility and adaptability to overcome challenges and successfully execute projects on time & on budget;
  • Ability to organize and delegate work, using Leader Standard Work approach to hold others accountable for results;
  • Willingness to learn & apply new skills, and teach others by sharing knowledge to grow self & the business;

  • Ability to collaborate with various bakery support resources. Able to provide direction to direct reports as needed but also lead by influence with non-site supporting resources;
  • Ability to create a team environment by sharing knowledge, involving employees in developing solutions, and providing guidance, direction, feedback and recognition to the team;
  • Proficient in computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook and experience with ERP/BPCS systems);
  • Strong understanding of sanitation, food handling, and food safety practices in a manufacturing environment preferred;
  • Familiarity with automated process/packaging technology is an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement programs;
  • College or University Degree in Engineering/ Machinery Processing is preferred;
  • Formal problem-solving training
