RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of Donor Services Director or Team Lead, follows established methods and standards of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and is responsible for the efficient and safe blood collection from volunteer donors. This is to be accomplished in a pleasant and reassuring manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (may include, but not limited to)

• Checks donor blood bags and donor room supplies to assure sufficient quantities to meet the daily needs.
• Maintains accurate manual and computer files on quality control and blood collections.
• Performs collection procedures from various donor categories. This includes obtaining demographic information and medical history, performing mini-physical examination, venipuncture and observing for donor reactions.
• Administers post-venipuncture care to donors ranging from serving refreshments to caring for donors who may have any type of reaction relating to the blood donation process (i.e., fainting, vomiting, having convulsions, etc).
• Promotes positive public relations with donors, recruiters, employees and sponsor contacts.
• Meets educational and certification requirements of Shepeard Community Blood Center and Donor Services Department and follows good manufacturing practices (cGMP).
• Performs other duties as assigned.

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY REPORTING:

The employee is required to perform assigned daily routines on a timely basis. The employee is expected to work with other departmental employees, as well as employees in other departments, as a team in order to provide the best quality service to donors.

The employee reports to the Director of Donor Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

• High school education or equivalent
• Completion of an approved phlebotomy course

Experience

• Satisfactory completion of clinical experience following phlebotomy course.
• Prefer one (1) year experience in the medical field taking vital signs, giving patient care, etc. a plus.

Knowledge and Skill Abilities

• Must have basic clerical skills in order to maintain clear QC and donor records.
• Must have basic computer skills not limited to data entry.
• Must be able to stand for prolonged periods.
• Must be able to clearly communicate with donors while exhibiting exceptional customer service.
• Must maintain professional appearance as defined by the Personal Appearance & Hygiene Policy and the Donor Services Handbook Addendum Policy.
• Must have physical ability to lift 35 pounds.
• Must maintain a 95% attendance record.

Licenses/Certifications

• Phlebotomy certification a plus.
• CNA certification a plus.

PHYSICAL SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

Employee will be regularly required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in a community blood center with high-risk exposure to blood borne pathogens, will be exposed to different environments due to various blood collection sites, and must be able to work a flexible schedule.
