MHC Healthcare is seeking a Pharmacy Technician – Prior Authorization Specialist to join the Pharmacy team at the Marana Main Health Center, located in the heart of Marana, AZ. The Pharmacy Technician – Prior Authorization Specialist provides customer service in the Pharmacy, processes prior authorizations, and performs duties under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist – Prior Authorizations or a Pharmacist within the permissible activities as defined by the Arizona Board of Pharmacy (AZBoP). MHC Healthcare is a Federally Qualified Community Health Center (FQHC), with 16 sites in Tucson and Pima County. The following qualifications are required:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician by the Arizona Board of Pharmacy
  • Cash handling experience
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card through the Arizona Department of Public Safety (or ability to obtain upon hire)
The following qualifications are preferred:
  • Experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a similar setting
  • Experience with prior authorizations
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if applicable and must be directly related to the functions and body of knowledge required to successfully perform the job.

This position has the following supervisory responsibility:
  • Does not direct or supervise others.

  • Thorough knowledge of Pharmacy Technician permissible duties as defined by the AZBoP.
  • Familiarity with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Computer proficient and the ability to use Pharmacy software.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Ability to effectively multi-task.
  • Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs clerical duties including processing patient referrals, obtaining reports and dictations, and responding to calls, mailings, and faxes.
  • Documents all pertinent information and communications regarding pharmacy care provided to patients.
  • Reviews EHR and works with the Pharmacist – Prior Authorizations to ensure quality of care.
  • Initiates and coordinates prior authorization requests through the prior authorization program dashboard.
  • Stays up-to-date with training on the prior authorization program.
  • Serves as a liaison between pharmacies and providers in response to inquiries regarding status of prior authorizations.
  • Supports Pharmacist – Prior Authorizations in development of programs to monitor prior authorization processing, program metrics, and reporting matrix templates
  • Performs the duties of a Pharmacy Technician when needed.
  • Receives and fills prescriptions according to established procedures and ensuring proper review for accuracy by supervising Pharmacist.
  • Enters patient medication orders or prescriptions into the pharmacy computer system or transcribes them into appropriate documents.
  • Identifies issues related to patient medication orders or prescription processing and assists the supervising Pharmacist with proposed alternative solutions, problem resolution, and follow-up.
  • Documents dispensing preparation, charging information, workload, and quality assurance data.
  • Follows established manual and electronic inventory control procedures.
  • Complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding the practice of pharmacy.
  • Repackages and labels bulk medications into unit dose packages.
  • Answers phones and provides customer service within the established scope of permissible duties of Pharmacy Technicians as defined by the AZBoP.
  • Participates in audits and quarterly reviews of drug outdates.
  • Assists with training and providing technical advice to other technicians and clerks.
  • Understands and complies with quality control procedures.
  • Recommends process improvements to pharmacy leadership, including those related to safety and quality control.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to policies and protocols related to infection control, medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
  • Complies with established financial procedures including proper cash handling protocols, collection of copayments, accuracy and timeliness of insurance information, billing payors, and preparation of financial reports.
  • Participates in trainings and continuing education.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Complies with all MHC Healthcare policies and procedures including those related to HIPAA and compliance.
