As a PACU / Recovery Nurse you will:

Provide care for post-operative patients recovering from anesthesia, including general, regional, and local. The PACU RN treats inpatients and outpatients according to their needs, monitoring their vital signs to determine necessary care. (Postoperative nausea is a commonly treated symptom.) Due to the possibility of rapid changes in a patient’s physiological condition, PACU RNs are required to administer diligent care via monitoring, assessment, intervention, and continuous reassessment.

Responsibilities:

  • Assesses plans and evaluates the nursing care needs of the patient after a surgical procedure.
  • Provides post-operative nursing care to the patient undergoing surgical procedures.
  • Provides comfort and support for post-operative patients.
  • Participates in the care of patients receiving conscious sedation.
  • Carries out physician orders.
  • Administers prescribed medications, applies dressings, and monitors vital signs.
  • Maintains infection control policies and protocols and actively monitors situations which could lead to a breach in those processes.
  • Ensures the proper handling of specimens.
  • Serves as the primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care.
  • Monitors, records and communicates patient conditions as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems.
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
  • Orients and mentors new staff members.
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
  • Assess and evaluate the patient. Continuously monitor the patient during his recovery phase. Document the status of the patient and the care provided.
  • Incorporate a sense of wellness by allowing the patient's family to be reunited with him/her as soon as feasible and by encouraging self-care by the patient.
  • Provide discharge instructions to the patient and his caregiver, asking for confirmation of understanding.
  • Document charges for all supplies used during the recovery phase.
  • Perform follow up patient assessment by calling the patient the day after surgery.
  • Remain prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct emergency procedures, locations of emergency call systems and location of emergency supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure that Universal Precautions are maintained.
  • Complete all necessary documentation on the Recovery Room record.
  • Assist with ordering drugs and supplies.
  • Wipe down gurneys and recliners between patients with a germicidal solution. Remake beds as needed.
  • Perform narcotic counts at the end of each surgical day.
  • Perform daily crash cart checks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Ability to handle variations of daily routine
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of infection control policies
  • Responds appropriately to criticism and to suggestions for work improvement

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Per diem

Pay: $48.00 - $68.00 per hour

Experience:

  • Nursing: 1 year (Preferred)
