Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity for a Packaging and Warehousing Manager, located at the Bay City Factory.
Job Summary:
The Packaging and Warehouse Manager for Bay City is responsible for managing a 200-employee operation at multiple facilities 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Twelve production lines bagging more than a million pounds of sugar daily are maintained, manned and managed. Product produced is stored and shipped from these facilities at rates up to 70 truckloads per day. In addition to the aforementioned activities, this operation loads and is responsible for shipping co-products such as pulp, molasses, and betaine. These loading activities also take place 24/7 365 days per year. The manager for this facility has oversight of the entire operation and manages a budget of more than 25 million dollars.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and direction for the workforces as a whole
  • Work directly with the production planner to maximize production runs and minimize changeovers while meeting production demand
  • Retain, hire, and train employees that fit a culture of integrity, excellence, pride, trust, and compassion
  • Manage, enforce, and administer hot work permits and confined space permits.
  • Lead production and shipping improvement efforts
  • Provide training for employees in the areas in job procedures, GMP/Food Safety and Occupational Safety.
  • Be SQF audit ready always
  • Manage and handle employee complaints, grievances, and discipline.
  • Work closely with the maintenance supervisor to ensure equipment, facilities, and sugar silos are managed, maintained and safe.
  • Manage and ensure that the workplace is safe with adequate explosion protection due to explosiveness of sugar dust.
  • Enforce Michigan Sugar safety policies and MIOSHA regulations.
  • Enforce Michigan Sugar personnel policies, the collective bargaining agreement and comply with all labor laws.
  • Ensure sugar handling, packaging, warehousing, and shipping operations follow 21CFR 110 “Current Good Manufacturing Practices in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food. Enforce Michigan Sugar GMP policies.
  • Ensure all required records under the “Establishment and Maintenance of Records” section of the “Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002” are maintained as it relates to immediate previous source and immediate subsequent recipient of food.
  • Support the Food Safety Committee as a member. Conduct monthly self-inspections according the MSC Sanitation Self Inspection Program.
  • Implement the HACCP program. Ensure screens, magnets and metal detectors are being monitored according to the HACCP plan and corrective action procedures are carried-out.
  • Direct the sanitation and cleaning program in and around the sugar warehouse. Maintain a Master Cleaning Schedule to direct and document sanitation operations. Maintain written cleaning procedures.
  • Ensure employees are following good housekeeping practices.
  • Ensure the pest control program follows Michigan Sugar and AIB standards in and around the sugar warehouse.
  • Respond to customer complaints in package quality. Determine root causes, implement, and document corrective actions.
  • Conduct and document mock recalls every six months. Correct any deficiencies.
  • Ensure COA’s are provided with shipments when required.
  • Ensure shipping vehicles picking up sugar are inspected and documented.
  • Ensure deliveries of incoming ingredients and packaging materials are inspected and documented.
  • Carry-out segregation procedures for non-conforming products.
  • Ensure storage practices follow AIB standards. An 18” perimeter of space must be provided between stored products and walls.
  • Direct stock rotation to avoid excessive age of product and materials.
  • Provide for the segregation of food grade and non-food grade lubricants and segregated storage of cleaning chemicals.
  • Administer glass and brittle plastic program in and around the sugar warehouse. Arrange for periodic documented audits of all essential glass and brittle plastic.
  • Conduct annual locker inspection.
  • Management and development of supervision and leadership through training, coaching and evaluations.
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing or management related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years of experience preferred in manufacturing, production or packaging and warehousing operations.
  • 4 years of prior supervisory experience.
  • Commitment to achieve and promote a high level of safety awareness.
  • Computer experience with the knowledge of Microsoft office, PeopleSoft, and Rapid software or similar.
  • Experience working with collective bargaining agreement and grievance handling process preferred.
