What will you do in this job?:
This is a remote, fly-in position located in Denali National Park. Due to this, all positions at DBL require assisting in other departments.

The Lodge is in Kantishna, deep in the backcountry of Denali National Park that can now only be accessed via aircraft. Due to the remote nature of our location, our staff must work collaboratively across departments and embrace the opportunity to provide our guests an unparalleled experience by filling in where business needs dictate. A Naturalists at the Denali Backcountry Lodge will spend 3 to 4 days a week leading backcountry hikes through trail-less tundra and boreal forest, outfitting guests for kayaking or SUP, fishing, cycling, and other outdoor activities, and giving accurate and enthusiastic interpretations of the natural and cultural history related to Denali National Park. The remaining time of your days will be filled working in housekeeping, kitchen, serving, landscaping, and other lodge operations. If you are a dependable worker willing to maintain a positive attitude and a safe environment for all guests and team members – this is an excellent role for you. You will have a range of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to:
  • Use interpretive techniques to enhance guest understanding of natural and cultural history during hikes. As well as educate them on local flora and fauna. Hikes vary from casual, moderate and difficult levels.
  • Develop formal and informal educational programs to present in nature and at the lodge
  • Exercise good judgment as to trail conditions, weather, large animal behavior and the physical limitations of individual guests when leading and/or assisting guests on hikes and in other activities
  • Safely transport guests to trailheads and to Wonder Lake on private and National Park Service lands with all required gear for the desired activity

  • Be prepared to utilize Wilderness First Responder training in emergency situations
  • Clean and maintain guest amenities; packs, trekking poles, rain gear, fishing gear, waders, kayaks, SUPs, saunas, and shuttle vehicles.
  • Clean guest facing areas; day lodge, main lodge, game room, decks and walkways, and guest rooms.
  • Assist during meal times by serving or dishwashing

What skills and experience do you need for this job?:
  • Be flexible and available to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends and possibly some holidays
  • Be comfortable working on your feet for extended periods of time in both indoor and outdoor environments
  • Be willing to learn about Alaska and the areas around our hotels
  • Some experience working in the tourism/hospitality industry a plus
  • Housekeeping or commercial laundry experience a plus

  • Adhere to safety procedures when using chemical cleaning materials
  • Alaska Food Workers Card required (can be obtained onsite)
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Certificate required
  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) strongly preferred
  • TAPS (Training for Alcohol Professionals) Card issued for the state of Alaska preferred (can be obtained onsite)
