Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the supervisor of the Director, the Manager is responsible and held accountable for the establishment and maintenance of protocols from procedures and standards within the laboratory. The Manager plans, coordinates and directs the daily activities of the personnel in the laboratory. He/she provides expert technical assistance and training of laboratory personnel including assigning, reviewing and evaluation technical personnel in the department(s) and ensures the completion, validity and accuracy of all test results where the manager holds a Florida State license. In departments where the Manager holds no Florida State license, the manager will function as an administrative manager and perform duties such as hiring, firing, merit evaluations, disciplinary actions, coaching, support team dynamics, employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and uphold hospital policies and procedures to include HIPPA and Code of Conduct. He/she must adhere to all accrediting body standards.

In this role you will:

  • Ensures all results and QC monitors procedures are performed by the supervisors.
  • Ensures compliance with policies, procedures and record keeping necessary for meeting standards of accreditation agencies.
  • Ensures Supervisors demonstrate competency with operating and maintaining equipment.
  • Demonstrates organizational ability with time and personnel.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient’s care which results in patient harm.
  • Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements and ensures all staff complete mandatory education requirements.
  • Ability to use Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety and teach others.
  • Regular, Punctual and dependable attendance.
  • Ensures all reviews, revisions and/or development of policies/procedures to meet to CLIA, State of Florida and CAP standards within scope of practice.
  • Review and assist with implementation of new procedures/policies in scope of practice.
  • Ensure all personnel are managed so that the workload allows the department to meet efficiency targets.
  • Efficiently communicates with market lab facilities to ensure quality and turnaround time expectations are met.
  • Perform other duties as necessary for efficient operation of the department.
  • Ensures staff scheduled to meet the needs of the department within productivity guidelines.
  • Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care or the services delivered.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.
  • Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in services, etc.) to disseminate information to laboratory staff, physicians, nurses, Medical Director(s) and other allied health personnel by written and/or verbal means.
  • Develops and reviews quality assurance and quality control procedures to ascertain that the supervisors are efficient in the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation to assure timely, accurate, reproducible test data insuring quality patient care.
  • Ensures supervision are qualified to implement, operate and perform maintenance of laboratory equipment/ instrumentation including troubleshooting.
  • Ensures all proficiency testing is performed at appropriate times and ensures the Medical Director(s) review all proficiency testing procedures, including evaluation of proficiency testing reports.
  • Assists the Medical Director(s) in coordinating, all laboratory functions in preparation for inspection by accrediting agencies, ensuring compliance.
  • Reviews monthly quality control records and test results that are submitted by supervisors to determine analytical errors, shifts, trends and correlation of data with common physiological conditions to assure quality patient test results.
  • Assist with payroll/ timekeeping.
  • Responsible to ensure the supervisors have performed the development, evaluation and maintenance (e.g. accuracy, completeness, up to date) of all procedure manuals in their division under the direction of the Medical Director.
  • Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient’s care which results in patient harm.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Florida Supervisor License in Microbiology or Histology (Microbiology preferred)
  • MT (ASCP) preferred
  • 5 years’ lab experience required; 3-5 years supervisor experience
