General Statement of Duties

Provides a variety of treatment and/or prevention services to clients with a wide range of psychiatric, emotional, relational, substance abuse or social problems for Outpatient Services; may provide consultation and education services to specific populations; does related work as required.


Essential Duties


This position is in our Providence Forge office responsible for providing services to Charles City and New Kent counties. Position requires knowledge of mental health and substance abuse outpatient treatment to individuals, groups, and families with a wide range of psychiatric, emotional, relational, substance use or social problems; provides crisis counseling and intervention services; responsible for providing individual, group and family therapy as well as case management services; requires skills in the provision of substance use and mental health services to children, adolescents, and adults; responds to emergency needs in the area; position requires ability to consult with other agencies and community groups; responsible for providing educational presentations to community or professional groups. Job duties require evening work.
Requires direct clinical work for outpatient and substance abuse services using evidence-based practices, in an office setting. Responsible for developing individualized, comprehensive service plans and work side by side with consumers and their families to carry out these plans; provides education to staff and clients regarding relapse prevention related to substance use disorders and mental health issues; responsible for providing crisis interventions including prescreening. Demonstrate use of Mental health and substance abuse assessment skills, clinical skills, communication skills (oral and written), crisis intervention skills and computer skills; ability to work independently, this includes sharing client caseloads, participating in on-going peer/group supervision, being flexible and adapting to change; carry out special activities as assigned, assist with emergency walk-in coverage, co-facilitating groups and assist in the community with mental health disaster coverage requests; demonstrate ability to prepares reports in a clear, concise, and grammatically correct manner. Writes chart notes, assessments and individual treatment plans, diagnosis and quarterly reviews using the correct formats in a timely manner.
Considerable knowledge of principles of community mental health and/or development disabilities and/or substance abuse; considerable knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts of normal and abnormal human behavior, personality development, family and group dynamics; considerable knowledge of and an ability to apply a variety of psychotherapeutic treatment techniques/modalities; adherence to basic ethics appropriate for a professional helping relationship; knowledge of mental health diagnoses, assessment, and/or psychological and educational testing; some knowledge of consultation program; considerable knowledge of psychosocial history development; very good interviewing and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to act with good judgment.


Minimum Qualifications


Possession of a two (2)-year master's degree in clinical social work, psychology or a directly related field plus one (1) year of experience in a mental health setting [for a one-year degree, one(1) additional year of experience or an internship is required to replace the second year of formal training]; OR , a bachelor's degree in related field plus four (4) years of experience in a community mental health setting; OR , any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


Additional Information


LPC or LCSW is required. Co-occurring experience in mental health and substance abuse strongly preferred.
Valid Virginia Driver's license required. TB Screening and Child Protective Services Record Check is required, upon hire.
A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.

Must hold or be qualified to work toward licensure or accreditation for the appropriate discipline.
