This position can be hired on as a level I or II. The requirements of a level II is a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, EIT and 2 years of experience.


Summary:
Under close supervision, provides mechanical design services and coordination of sanitation and health facilities projects for the Division of Environmental Health and Engineering (DEHE).

Responsibilities:

Assists in project design and technical consulting services for mechanical engineering, design and construction of health and sanitation facilities for the Division of Environmental Health & Engineering (DEHE).

Provide assistance in developing: engineering calculations, construction drawings, and project specifications. Develop engineering calculations, design drawings, and project specifications for plumbing, heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC), fuel storage and distribution, medical gas and vacuum, fire protection, specialty ventilation, waste heat recovery, and other engineering systems in ANTHC and regional facilities.

Applies technical knowledge and skills to develop environmentally sustainable solutions for Arctic conditions. Assures effective operation and maintenance of constructed facilities. Assures the satisfaction of internal and external customers. Develops technical documentation as required.

Reviews and evaluates health and sanitation facilities design plans and technical specifications. Recommends improved engineering methods to prevent errors, enhance safety and comfort, conserve energy, and reduce construction and operating costs for facilities. Inspects completed facilities to assure compliance with plans and specifications.

Performs field inspection and testing of facilities and equipment to verify operational parameters. Performs technical engineering assessment, analysis and calculations related to design, construction and project cost. Develops analytical comparisons of new and existing processes; recommends corrective actions and improved operational functions.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

· Knowledge of principles of mechanical engineering and construction.

· Knowledge of mechanical components and specifications for mechanical distribution systems.

· Knowledge of AutoCAD.

· Skill in evaluating the work of contractors and consultants for compliance with project plans, specifications and applicable laws, ordinances and policies.

· Skill in maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, regional Tribal organizations, and representatives from other local, state and Federal agencies.

· Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.

· Skill in reading and evaluating blueprints and technical schematics.

· Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

· Skill in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited university or college program, or the ability to obtain the degree within twelve (12) months of accepting the position.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-supervisory – Entry level, no experience is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Travels occasionally within Alaska in small fixed wing aircraft; travels outside Alaska.
